When Candice Bergen insulted Reese Witherspoon's mother

Candice Bergen was such a bitch for telling Reese Witherspoon's mother to go back to her double wide and fry something and she deserved to get punched in the jaw by Reese Witherspoon for it.

reply

No she didn't. Candice Bergen has been the only sane character in this movie. After Melanie lied about who she was and goes back to her husband she just is the only character not blindly following it and that makes her a villain in this stupid film. Reese Witherspoon could have told her she was wrong but then she'd just be a hypocrite since she was ashamed of her background as well.

reply

Well still Candice Bergen should not have told Reese Witherspoon's mother to go back to her double wide and fry something. If you were Reese Witherspoon and Candice Bergen told your mother to go back to her double wide and fry something, what would you do?

reply

There would be nothing to do. Bergen's point is that these southern characters are just idiot bumpkins and the movie didn't offer any evidence to the contrary. They were just stereotypes and caricatures. This is how Reese is able to get away with assault. No need for arrest because hyuk hyuk. Again this stupid bit is only there to designate her as a villain and it isn't earned.

reply

Face punching that cleatus yokel face

reply

And also, how can you take Candice Bergen's side after she told Reese Witherspoon's mother to go back to her double wide and fry something?

reply

How can I take Reese's side after she lied about her family and history, then strung a guy along and dumped him at the altar without talking about how she felt before everybody spent all that money and traveled all that way? What, I'm supposed to believe she suddenly cares about it? Face it, whatever fault the movie tries to force on Bergen, Witherspoon's character is much worse.

OK, Maybe Reese Witherspoon was wrong to lie about her family and history and string a guy along and dump him at the altar without talking about how she felt before everybody spent all that money and traveled all that way, but it doesn't justify what Candice Bergen said to Reese Witherspoon's mother. And besides, how would you feel if someone told your mother to go back to her double wide and fry something? And I also wonder how Candice Bergen would feel if someone told her mother to go back to her double wide and fry something.

reply

But why focus on the one line from Bergen? This movie clearly hates all of its characters equally.

reply

Maybe the movie clearly hates all of it's characters equally and I don't know why focus on that line but I also have to say that Reese Witherspoon was lucky Candice Bergen didn't press charges when she punched her in the jaw for what she said to her mother and I know that Candice Bergen was kind of irked about Reese Witherspoon lying about her whole identity and leaving Patrick Dempsey at the altar and everyone around her supporting that but that was no reason for her to take it out on Reese Witherspoon's mother.

reply

Sure there was. In the real world you don't just dismiss wasting everyone's money and time for a wedding and leaving your son at the altar which was what Pearl was doing with a smile on her face. Again, Pearl is as badly written as any of the characters here. She spends half the movie resenting Melanie for going off to New York and then the other half saying how she didn't want Melanie to have her small town life. Which is it?

reply

Well, again, I have to say that Melanie was lucky Kate didn't press charges when she decked her for saying what she said to Pearl.

I have met several celebrities. Most are very nice, but Candice Bergen was by far the rudest person ever!!

reply

Glad you agree. I wonder how Candice Bergen would like it if someone told her mother to go back to her double-wide and fry something like she did to Reese Witherspoon's mother.
