overrated anyone??

Was anyone else disappointed by this film? I have been waiting since Pan's Labyrinth came out to see this movie and after reading all the positive reviews I guess I had extremely high hopes. I was not very impressed at all but I did like the way they made Santi look.

The Devils Backbone: 6/10
Eagle Eye: 7/10
Home Alone 4: 0/10

yeah, the guy at the shop & my sister recommended this film to me. i loved pan's so i had so much expectations for this.
it's not bad, but it's not great either. the suspense just wasn't there. but the SFX for santi was awesome.

I thought this was very good. So in short no, it isn't overrated. If anything it's underrated.

Film 4 showed three of his films over 3 nights, of which I had only seen Pan's Labyrinth.

Cronos was dull and uneventful and this was slightly better improving near the end, but otherwise quite mundane and so, yes, overrated.

I will be watching Pan's again, but I won't be bothering to watch the other two again. Seen them once, once is more than enough, couldn't stand sitting through them again knowing pretty much nothing happens.

Maybe it is like Dan Brown, after the Da Vinci Code all of a sudden Angels and Demons was a hit, although it had been overlooked previously. I know it is a mortal insult to compare anyone to Dan Brown, but is this not the case after Pan's Labyrinth?

And no, I have not read or watched any of Mr Brown's abominations and never plan on doing so.

I think the reason this film has such high expectations is because the majority of people who see it have seen Pan's Labryinth first. If not for this, the film would have nothing to be compared to. If The Devil's Backbone stood on it's own and was not compared to it's 'sister film', all the time, more people would realise what a fantastic film is. I think to appreciate this film, you should view it as it's own seperate film, not comparing it to anything else.

It may not be as flashy as some of Del Toro's other films, but from a writing standpoint it is pretty damn admirable. I mean there's almost no element wasted, it's really well-thought-out, and in the end everything falls into place very nicely.

But I guess, if you expect more of an actual ghost horror-movie and are not that intrigued by the setting or the set-up, you might find yourself a little disappointed.
For me it was a nice twist on a sometimes really stale genre, so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Yeah. Then again, I didn't like Pan's Labyrinth or Hellboy either, but I thought I'd give Del Toro one last chance. I had to turn it off after about an hour. So ponderous and overblown. I tried coming back to it later, but I only made it a few more minutes before shutting it off again in exasperation (it was [SPOILER] the laughably implausible comic-book style explosion that finally did me in -- even when he's making children die horribly, Del Toro fails to move me). I just don't care in the least what happens. The film is unfocused, trying to be too many things at once, and the characters are all fairly flat. It's very rare that I don't finish a film once I've started it, but I think I've seen enough of The Devil's Backbone.

I agree with everything you say Pogen-2. The character development is utterly disappointing in this movie, and when people died I really didn't care. The ghost was just there for effects. It wasn't scary at all (and if you were scared by it, you haven't seen many horror films) and it was badly used. Too bad the bomb in the yard didn't go off in the beginning; this movie should have ended sooner. It bored me to death.

reply

I completely agree with you CogburnSwale.
This movie was way too long, and really bored me. The ghost really had no purpose at all; and all this movie was about basically, is an *beep* guy. That's it.

Well my rating is 6/10.....

I recently watched conjuring, its then i decided to see some old horror genre movies... I selected devils backbone with my colleagues after watching positive reviews and ratings.... To be honest i didn't like the movie at all.

I felt it to be slow paced, very few thrill movements and predictable plot... To be frank highly disappointed

reply

I would only give 4/10
