I don't get why people hate the scene....

...where Otis holds the gun to the cop's head for what feels like forever. It just shows how *beep* up Otis really is by prolonging the inevitable. Kinda like he is just playing with him before killing him.

Chalk me up as a "hater" of that scene...didnt' help when I saw this in the theaters (yes, did see this in theaters back in '03), some guy in the audience yelled "DO IT ALREADY!!!" making everyone chuckle. Just goes on too long and I never thought, for one second, he WOULDN'T pull the trigger, so that part of it doesn't work IMO...but that's just MY opinion.

I think the scene shows how truly sadistic and cruel Otis really is. He left the cop there for an outrageously long time just waiting to die. I can just picture the thoughts going through his head saying "Isn't he going to shoot me yet? Maybe he won't. Maybe he'll let me live after all..." and then the gunshot finally happens. Otis got pleasure off of his fear and his waiting to die and get it over with already, so he decided to draw the murder out longer than necessary to extend his pleasure.

I've been waiting for you, Ben.

I've seen more then one person post this...I believe this is incorrect...the scene is in slow motion, even the gun shot itself and the cop falling over is all in slo-mo. Its long & quiet to us (the audience), but a lot quicker in real time when he off's him. In regular motion the cop prob had 5 seconds to ponder or wonder anything.

To answer the original question, I don't like the scene because it's a time-waster. I don't think any of us were surprised he got shot, and I don't want to sit there for five minutes (okay, not literally that long probably, but still...) just watching nothing.

I actually thought my television had frozen.

The wait was pointless.

The wait did seem like an eternity though LOL

I was the best part of the whole movie. The first time I watched it. It was the one part of the movie that stabbed at my guts. I remember the horror of knowing you're about to die being stretched out for so long making my bones quiver to their core.

Really damn old post to respond to, but that's one of my favorite scenes in the movie. For exactly the reason you've stated

I thought it was perfect as well. The long silence between the ending of the song and the shot adds to the suspense with us, the audience, as well as the terror the officer must have been experiencing in his final moments.

its a good scene but rather silly idea that the cop drops his gun just because the killer SAID frezze lol he could have still blowed him away
