I really tried to get into this movie. Every single time I turned it back on,I fell asleep. I finally gave up after about five trys. Oh well.

LOL! Yes, it is rather boring. I kept looking at the running time on my DVD player, longing for the end, so I could finally go to bed. (I never actually fall asleep in front of the TV for some reason. And I always try to finish a movie in one go.) Then again, I did only get 3 & 1/2 hours of sleep the night before...

I gave it 40 minutes to tell something, then I quit. It's nicely shot with some really nice winter mountain pictures but the roughly comparable MCCABE & MRS MILLER is one of the most thrilling and exploding action dramas compared with this one.
One of the reasons for the excessive boredom is the poor performance of the entire cast with the exception of Polley.

I disagree completely. I thought the performances were sublime. I have seen this film many times and can't get enough of it. McCabe and Mrs. Miller, by contrast was a turgid ordeal.

This was a beautiful film. One of my favorites.

You gotta love reviews about a movie coming from people
who were either half ass sleep or didn't even bother watching all of it!!!!

I watched the whole thing wide awake and with undivided attention and it frankly sucked.

It might have been easier to follow and more engaging if the DVD contained subtitles. The dialog was buried in the music and atmospherics, as well as being heavily accented and often lazily delivered.

The story was hard to follow because some of the flashback scenes weren’t readily apparent, and the younger versions of the characters weren’t identifiable as such. Adding to the confusion, the original claim holder who ‘bought’ Dillon’s wife and baby daughter actually resembled the present day Dillon.

I found it a top-of-the-line Western about the beginning and end of a boom town in the Sierra Nevadas that inexplicably fell through the cracks when it was released. It has similarities to "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" (1971), but with more interesting characters, a more compelling story and spectacular locations, not to mention less focus on a house of ill repute.

Anyone who appreciates grim, realistic Westerns like "The Great Silence" (1968), "Bad Company" (1972), "The Missouri Breaks" (1976), "Heaven's Gate" (1980), "Unforgiven" (1992) and "North Star" (1996), should appreciate this one. It's as good or, in most cases, better. I should add that it's not all grim; there are glimmerings of light.

It's boring and hard to pay attention to

After the success of American Beauty Wes Bentley was offered a bunch of movie roles, yet he seemed to pick all the crappy ones. He really should have fired his agent. It's a shame. The dude had potential to be an A list Oscar winning actor.
