Million dollar baby, rip off?

Hey million dollar baby's only just coming out over here in the UK. i was wondering if any of you 'girlfight' fans had seen it and had any opinion on wether its a hollywood rip off or worth seeing. I loved girlfight so i'm sceptical about this 'million dollar baby'

reply

well i havent yet seen girlfight, but only read about it & watched the previews. It seems to be very different from million dollar baby, which I have just seen in theaters today. all i can tell you is million dollar baby is part action-part drama, and is one of the best movies ive seen in a while. i dont wanna give away the story, but you really must go & see it!

Both movies are great in my opinion.
On a side note, I think I want to marry Michelle Rodriguez. Any of you know how I can get in touch with her? haha

She's dead. Michael shot her, because they took his boy.

"Girlfight" is a character-study, an unpretentious low-budget film about a troubled, moody girl who finds some direction for her life in the boxing ring. "Million Dollar Baby" is big Hollywood production full of sentiment and about a quest for a championship. It's "Rocky" meets "Terms of Endearment". I admired "Million Dollar Baby" but actually liked "Girlfight" more for it's unpretentiousness. It seemed more real and less manipulative.

Girlfight had a lot more heart and a lot less hype. Million Dollar Baby is cartoonish and overdone.

I'm going to assume that you've actually watched the movie by now, not just the trailer, and cringe at what you typed.

Just seen this post so pardon the tardy reply. My thoughts when I learned of the star-studded Million Dollar Baby was that woman boxers are now more acceptable and that Girlfight was ahead of its time. Perhaps if it had been released later it would have done better at the box office. I loved the film and respect its directors and whoever financed its making for their support of the story. But then again...maybe the fact that Girlfight didn't have big-name stars is why it did not get the attention it deserved. Anyway...haven't seen MDB yet. I will eventually. I'm interested in seeing how it compares with Girlfight.

Girlfight is way better than Million Dollar Baby. It came out first. Clint Eastwood had to have seen it. In my opinion, he copied the idea. I love Michelle Rodriguez...she is a fantastic actress. I loved her in Blue Crush as well. Million Dollar Baby is good, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't help thinking of how good Girlfight is and how little credit it got. Hilary Swank is an ok actress...I like Rodriguez better...she has a real prescence about her.

Million Dollar Baby was based off of a collection of boxing stories, called "Rope Burns," which was written way before the year 2000, before this movie came out. Million Dollar Baby isn't a ripoff, considering that the story it was based off of was written before this movie even came out. I haven't seen this yet, though.

What is wrong with you retards? The question was answered in Lando Hass's post above. BASED ON A COLLECTION OF BOXING STORIES that pre-date "Girlfight." End of discussion. Jesus.

Million Dollar baby was out way later than this film. This film was much different in scope, and I felt both of them had great merits to stand alone. The Million Dollar Baby film showed the depths of the conviction that the girl felt to get out of her station in life; and it showed the consequences to being a fighter. The girl in Girl Fight wanted to prove herself.

Million Dollar Baby did have substantially more Hollywood clout behind it, with legendary Clint Eastwood directing, who'd alread gotten an Oscar for directing Unforgiven, and has received multiple awards and nominations for his career. But it was 4 years after Girl Fight.

Hilary had already won an Oscar, and Morgan Freeman was nominted multiple times.

The thing that Girl Fight had going for it, in my opinion was that Michelle Rodriguez was an unknown, and you didn't have the glamorous idea of Hollywood behind her. She went on the Leno show and said she memorized dialogue as a new actor, by treating it as a rap song. Much different than Hilary beating the pavement since she was a young 15 year old.

Michelle started at it early, too, but really didn't get anything major unti this at the age of 21.

its a rip-off allright, a cheap tearjerker which does almost everything wrong which works out fine in Kusamas film. So see it only to appreciate "Girlfight" the more after.

The guy that wrote "M$B" was very old, and wrote the story long before "Girlfight" was made.

just because million dollar baby is about a female boxer you retards think it's a rip-off? clint eastwood directed million dollar baby with some plausibility and style which means it craps all over that horrible, corny joke of a film 'girlfight'. the casting was bad, the script was laughable, the whole film was a predictable, contrived mess with one dimensional characters.

Who's pickin' the banjo here?
