God-awful

As a movie enthusiast I never thought I could despise a movie, until Moulin Rouge.

I'd like to know who was smoking what when they actually decided to start shooting. Did Nicole just suddenly decide she wanted to pretend to be Marilyn/Madonna?
This is one movie that no one will ever be able to excuse away. After 12 minutes I could stand no more. We can ask "WTF?" forever and there are no answers.
An insult to every musical ever made.

I couldn't disagree more, I personally love this movie, it's one of my favorites! Sure it has its cheesy and OTT moments but I think that's how this movie is suppose to be, OTT comedy but with the added beautiful romance between Christian and Satine. I also absolutely love the soundtrack, great choice of songs used in the movie, great sets & costumes, and really solid acting from everyone on the cast.

Btw considering this movie has a 7.6 rating at IMDb and mostly positive reviews from viewers and critics alike on many other popular movie review sites, and being nominated for many awards including the Oscars and Golden Globes (and actually winning several of them), I think it's safe to say that the people who dislike this movie seems to be in the minority.

I recall trying to watch it on DVD just after its theatrical run and just couldn't bare it. It is clearly a 'big screen' movie so I acknowledge that it doesn't have the same impact on a small screen. I loved Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet but MR was just too camp, kitsch and 'theatrical' for my taste - meaning that the characters and acting aren't meant to be realistic in any way but represent emotions. Now for my penance I'm about to build a website about the movie, the costumes etc. Since I am older now I think I need to revisit the film. Perhaps time has changed my demeanour.

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

I love Ashley Wagner's figure skating program which uses music from Moulin Rouge, so when I noticed it was on tv this morning I figured I'd watch it. I didn't even get through an hour before I changed the channel. I might give it another try some day, but it was entirely too chaotic in general and in terms of sets and costuming. I know that's what they were going for, but I couldn't handle it. I'd have to give 1 or 2 stars to what I saw.

Well stated, and I couldn't agree more.

This film could choke a donkey! Poor little old Henry Toluse-Lautrec, why did john leguizamo have to lissssthp like that? I can't even begin to start with people who point out your/we are "close minded" for having our own opinions, this film is junk and unfortunately has been cast off and accepted as quality. For example it's cutesy tootsy little run-on rhymes are phoney baloney and Nicole kidman is boney Maroney. Blending major film scores, blatant rip off's, horrible renditions...never mind. I am not saying anyone has to agree with me but let me have my opinion as you have yours. alright?

I hated it. . . . watched the first hour painfully.

I completely agree. I can't understand why some people love it.

It is called 'Entertainment'.........................

Even if the tacky story, anachronism score and poor singing voices don't suit you, then the cinematography, brilliant sets and directors imagination must be appreciated. And Jim Broadbent is excellent in it.
