keep that Luger in his pants without removing the bullets? Seems a strange oversight for seasoned soldier who was familiar with guns.

He was a seasoned soldier familiar with rifles and some other weapons. As far as I know, many soldiers, then and now, are not trained much on pistols. They are of limited value on the battle field. I'm sure none of the Easy Company infantry were trained on Lugers.

I don't see how that makes a difference. Carrying any loaded firearm in your pocket is dangerous. It's common sense to err on the side of caution if you're carrying a lethal weapon - especially if you're unfamiliar with it.

Yes, but people continue to shoot themselves anyway. Even people who should know better.
