tripp: "go home to your mom vernon"

(in the book he says "sorry about your brother, vernon") absolutely hilarious
either way, especially vernon's confusion.

tripp: he's been through a lot tonight, he almost did something really stupid, i don't think he needs sexual confusion thrown into the mix.

crabtree: actually ... i think it could be just the ticket.

(the way downey jr. says it is classic)

James: Now, that is a big trunk. It holds a tuba, a suitcase, a dead dog, and a garment bag almost perfectly.
Grady: That's just what they used to say in the ads.

It was also great when James takes the codeine and coughs it out and it lands on Grady's coat. Then Grady picks it off and hands it back to James and says, "Why don't we try that again"

haha, yes! the "Why don't we try that again" line is so the best one of them all. i absolutely love it ( :

"I'd love to know how your mind works."

No one mentioned these[Sara smells Antonia's perfume on Grady's clothes]
Sara Gaskell: Is that Cristaile?
Grady Tripp: Mm.
Sara Gaskell: My God, I wear the same scent as a transvestite.

Grady Tripp: [Narrating] She was a junkie for the printed word. Lucky for me, I manufactured her drug of choice.

Grady Tripp: I hope you don't find this forward Amanda, but I wonder if I might ask: Did you ever go to Catholic school?
Amanda Leer: Excuse me?

I'm not sure if this one's been said or not but it sure is my favorite.

Grady narrating:I knew that she loved to read, she was a junkie for the printed word...and lucky me...I manufactured her drug of choice.

I can't believe that no-one hasn't mentioned the following, because it remains one of the funniest pieces of dialogue in the film to me that I invariably like to quote:

Traxler: So, professor Tripp, is it true that Flynn put paprika on his dick to, you know, like, make it more stimulating for the chick?

Tripp: (something in lines of) How the hell should I know?

Traxler: Well, I see you are reading his biography...

Tripp: Oh, yeah, that's right. Yes, well, he put all sorts of things on it - salad dressing, ground lamb...

Traxler: SICK!

Crabtree (gleefully): We come to spring ya, Jimmy.

I love the scene when James is singing with Micky Rooney & Judy Garland-"good moring, good morning"

Crabtree talking to Tripp at the bar
"Sara and Walter declined.
I guess they just wanted...
to go home and curl up
on the couch with Poe."

Crabtree-"You owe him a book too?" in regards to Vernon chasing after them in the alley

reply

One of my favorites is the "Do you owe him a book, too?" line mentioned above. I couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw the movie, and think I missed then next ten minutes.

Another great line is when the writer and the agent are in the car alone and Michael Douglas's character finally begins to express a little concern about what it is doing to the agent's career that the "Wonder Boy" hasn't come up with another manuscript. Downey admits that things are pretty bad for him, careerwise, but then tries to shake it off a little and says, "I guess I just don't fit into the new corporate culture." Douglas asks "What kind of culture is that." Downey thinks for a second and says "Competence?" Downey has perfect delivery and the way the two of them laugh together is just a riot.

Clementine: I'm a vindictive little bitch, truth be told!

reply

Ah, bejasus, I love that moment, too!

This is my all time favorite movie...i cannot even begin to count how many times I have seen it! My favorite line has to be:

"smoke the rest fo that joint and you can eat the box!"

Priceless!! There are so many great ones!!!!1

reply

I love all of the ones that were mentioned but one of my favourite moments in the movie is when James is in his sleeping bag in Prof. Tripp's office and Crabtree walk into the office in only his boxers. Downey's delivery is absolutely perfection and hilarious!

Terry: Good morning, Jamesss.

and then

Terry: Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy... I'm gonna take a shower.

OMG, every time I see that part I rewind and watch it again, lol.

Also, when Tripp, Q, and Crabtree are in the car, running away from the Vernon dude. That whole scene is hilarious!

Another part I loved is the whole, "Someone jumped on your car with their butt." So funny.

Total total total totally total total... total providence.

reply

There is a moment when Grady walks into the bar and a semi-conscious James Leer is sitting in a booth with Terry Crabtree. If you are watching carefully, you see Crabtree's hand under the table feeling up James Leer. When he sees Grady, he moves his hand.

Not a quote, I know, but the kind of subtle moment that fills the movie.

"A novel i wrote, as you say, "under the influence" won the PEN award which, by the way, I accepted, under the influence."

Oh I adore this film. The snow, the bridges, the Pittsburgh cityscapes, the soundtrack, the literary references. I fell in love with it in college, watched it today for the first time in several years and so many memories came flooding back... one of those movies that I will love forever.

reply

There's 2 moments that I really love.
Both use the same timing/delivery.

1. At the reception Grady - "I don't drink, [pause] normally"

2. As Grady inserts the next page of his book, and types 3 digits [pause] then the fourth.

I fail to find any flaw with this film. The tone, the dark(ish) humour, the characters, actors, dialogue. It all fits like a comfy pair of slippers.
I could watch it any number of times, and it will not get old.

I love the line when Antonia asks Grady for a lift

Antonia: I need a ride home.

Grady: I'm your man.

Also at the end when Vernon tells Grady

"That book of yours must have been one nutty ride."

reply

Vernon Hardapple: Man, that musta been one nutty book.

I loved the bit where James spits the Codeine pill on Grady. The expression of horror on his face is hilarious!

Loved the two car chase bits. First one where Grady, Terry and Q take on Vernon and second where Terry kills Grady's book! The look on RDJ faces during both are priceless :D

That is my fav line too sublime. Of course what sets it up is that he goes on and on about how great the cheap prepackaged donut tastes.

Your all time fav movie. You have very good taste. It is excellent.

James: Seitz Plastics. That's where he met my morn. She was a fry cook in the cafeteria. Before that, she'd been a dancer.
Grady: What kind of dancer? .
James: Whatever kind they wanted her to be.

James: Can I--I mean--do you mind--if I wear this again Prof. Tripp?
Grady: Wear whatever you want to!
