tripp: "go home to your mom vernon"

(in the book he says "sorry about your brother, vernon") absolutely hilarious
either way, especially vernon's confusion.

tripp: he's been through a lot tonight, he almost did something really stupid, i don't think he needs sexual confusion thrown into the mix.

crabtree: actually ... i think it could be just the ticket.

(the way downey jr. says it is classic)

reply

James: Now, that is a big trunk. It holds a tuba, a suitcase, a dead dog, and a garment bag almost perfectly.
Grady: That's just what they used to say in the ads.

It was also great when James takes the codeine and coughs it out and it lands on Grady's coat. Then Grady picks it off and hands it back to James and says, "Why don't we try that again"

Just watched this for the 2nd time. Ten years ago. Even funnier this time around. My favorite as well. Douglas delivered it dead solid perfect. Dry as my martini.

Tripp to Crabtree after the cops take James Leer away:
Between Officer Pupchick and you, he could be the next Jean Genet. Nobody's written a really good novel from prison lately.

I know someone already quoted this one, but it's good enough to repeat...Leer's drug-addled monologue as Crabtree and another student carry him out of the auditorium:
Leer: The doors made so much noise!
Tripp: Is he all right?
Leer: It was so embarrassing! He had to be carried out.
Crabtree: He's fine. He's narrating.
Leer: They were going to the men's room. But would they make it in time?

Leer sitting on the hood of Tripp's car licking the powdered sugar off a donut:
Leer: You gotta try these! They're incredible. Incredible!
Tripp: Finish the rest of that joint, James, you can start chewing on the box.
Leer: Hey, Professor Tripp? Someone jumped on your car with their butt!
Tripp: How do you know?
Leer: You can see the outline of a butt!

reply

i have a couple favorites that haven't been mentioned

when Prof. Tripp is on the phone with Sarah's husband, telling him that he's in love with his wife, and Gaskell asks if he's drinking, just as Tripp is taking a hit off a joint, and he answers honestly, "No."

when Tripp and James are in the car talking about what happened with the dog and Tripp says something about the dog not needing to take "two to the chest"

oh and when he's talking to Emily's father and mentions the book, and Emily's father looks up with dark eyes and says so gravely, "Oh yes. The book."

reply

Although I'm laughing out loud at every single one of the posts before yours, I have to say that I absolutely love James's shriekish giggles at the auditorium scene. It's just so classic!! You've got two briliants writes (James Lear and Grady Tripp) standing there listening to another man telling THEM how to write--yeah, right!

reply

i agree with walrus29. Although there are so many great lines in this movie, i have to say i laughed the hardest at James laughing in the auditorium too...Its just so...wonderfully odd...

The successful writer giving a speech at the college:

"I...am a Writer!" (applause)

Classic. I'm a bit of a writer, and I've seen a number of successful writers give speeches on writing that sounded a lot like this. Having a crowd applauding some guy just for saying something stupid and obvious like "I am a writer" is a perfect representation of these speeches. Anyone who is at all familiar with the writing "scene" can definitely relate to this. One of the funniest moments in any movie I've watched recently.

reply

agreed! i hated that guy, anyway. pretentious *beep*

So there it was, Somewhere in the night a Manhatten book editor was prowling the streets of Pittsburgh, best selling author at his side, dead dog in his trunk.

reply

I'm definately partial to the conversation in the Restaurant with the line:

James: I just wanted to stay with you for a little while.
Professor Tripp: I'm a teacher, James, not a Holiday Inn

As well as a couple lines regarding the killing of the Chancellor's dog, Poe:

Professor Tripp: Trust me, James, when the family pet's been assassinated the owner doesn't want to her that one of her student's was the trigger man.
James: Does she want to hear that it was one of her professors?

ALL IN ALL AN EXCELLENT MOVIE!!!

reply

[deleted]

Just a small addition to a previously mentioned one:

Professor Tripp: Trust me, James, when the family pet's been assassinated the owner doesn't want to her that one of her student's was the trigger man.
James: Does she want to hear that it was one of her professors?
Professor Tripp: *pauses* I've got tenure.

Sarah: You first
Professor Tripp: *breathes in*
Sarah: I'm pregnant

And for this one, it's not so much the line, as the situation:

Professor Tripp: I take it back, shoot him.

reply

This one's clever:
Sarah: (watching James drive away in the cop car) I wonder if this is what the school has in mind when they promise a liberal education.

reply

James Leer: You're not like my other teachers, Professor Tripp.
Grady Tripp: You're not like my other students, James.

James Leer: Now, that is a big trunk. It holds a tuba, a suitcase, a dead dog, and a garment bag almost perfectly.
Grady Tripp: That's just what they used to say in the ads.

Grady Tripp: Okay, James, I wish you hadn't shot my girlfriend's dog. Even though Poe and I weren't exactly what you'd call simpatico, that's no reason he should've taken two in the chest.

James Leer: It's just... for good luck. Some people carry rabbits' feet...
Grady Tripp: ...You carry firearms.

plus all the ones already mentioned. this is a classic movie!!

reply

This movie is just so smack full of good lines, its hard to chose. My favorite however, whithout a doubt, is this one;

Grady Tripp: [Narrating] "So there it was. Somewhere in the night, a Manhattan book editor was prowling the streets of Pittsburgh; best-selling author at his side, dead dog in his trunk."

To, it just kinda sums up the entire movie in one great line. Damn, why cant all movies bee this good...

reply

Yeah, thats true. I cant believe this movie is rated a 7.6. Ok, it could be worse, but come on! One of the best movies ever. Its on the top of my list, i can tell you that!

My favorite quote is from Robert Djr, he is really the best cast role in the movie. And i dont meand Michael Douglas or the rest is *beep* they are very good too, but there is somethign about Robert that's just really cool"

This one is in the car with Grady, Crabtree, Oola and Vernon

"Did you or did you not have a gun to my head"
The quote itself is so so, but the way he says it, is just classic.

Also: Go home to your momma, vernon

'How was school?'
'The worst day of my life, what do you think?'

reply

That's just what they used to say in the ads. Probably one of the greatest lines from any movie ever!
Glad you picked up on that, and the other ones. Never even heard of it till I saw it on tv tonight. Fantastic! I think a special mention should go to Mike's dressing gown and hat.

reply

I agree with crimson wraith, I think the scene where Crabtree drives the car into the side of the building and Tripp's book goes blowing in the wind is quite possibly the funniest scene in the whole movie!

reply

It seems a lot of you grabbed my favorite lines, but one was not mentioned that I tend to use in life, when I see a very long book, or even think of my own lack of writer's block:
James Leer on first seeing Grady Tripp's neverending follow-up:
"Is ALL of that single-spaced???"

Hee hee. I loved the book and I love the writer, but seeing the movie actually set and filmed in Pittsburgh made it feel that much more personal. I've lived here in Pittsburgh for 15 years. Seeing the actually places on screen that I see every day just made it that much more interesting.

"This is this, this isn't something else. This is this."

reply

I found another one today. At the very beginning when Tripp is introducing James Leer:

"...Junior Lit. major and sole inhabitant of his own gloomy gulag."

"This is this, this isn't something else. This is this."
