Forrester's Greatest Gift to Jamal

Was it the teaching? The inspiration? The friendship? Nah. Pretty sure it was the free-and-clear NYC real estate.

Food in Films: The soup discussion was clever and contained this nugget of wisdom..."The object of a question is to obtain information that matters only to us. You were wondering why your soup doesn't firm up? Probably because your mother was brought up in a house that never wasted milk in soup. That question was a good one, in contrast to, "Do I ever go outside?", which fails to meet the criteria of obtaining information that matters to you."

Probably the opportunity to get his writing noticed, by asking him to write the forward to his book.

You think writing a forward is worth more than a mortgage-free, three-room, pre-war, Bronx apartment? You have the heart of a poet. And I respect that.

reply

Why thank you very much. The apartment building would be extremely valuable too. You might have the mind of a businessman.

The ability to get a foothold in a fairly rare career that you actually want to do instead of wallowing around, hoping that you get your break someday? I'd consider that pretty major. Is it worth as much as this apartment? I guess that remains to be seen for young Jamal. At least he has a solid opportunity.

reply

I reckon the friendship and mentoring from a brilliant writer that also acted as a father figure. The apartment is a sweet deal too but comes at the end and Jamal was on his way to a fine college with writing and career prospects so he would not be in a run down Bronx neighbourhood for long.
