This movie hurtles through it's 3 hour runtime.

It's just so briskly-paced and edited that it feels much shorter than it's runtime.

In my eyes, the only part of this film that could be shortened to the benefit of the overall pace would have to be Earl Partridge's voice-over montage about how life isn't short, it's long.

The rest is golden perfection. Can't believe PTA made this massive movie in his 20s.

Damn, that's probably my favorite moment of the film and the one I connected to the most. If anything needed to be cut, it would be the corny singalong scene.

Anyone here mentions Hotel California dies before the first line clears his lips.

PTA did say in his interview with Marc Maron that if he made Magnolia today, he might not have done the singalong. For me, it hits the perfect emotional note. I like Earl Partridge's voice-over a lot, but I recall thinking the last time I saw the movie that it could stand to be tightened up a little for the sake of pace.

I like the sing along scene. It ties the characters together in a way that nothing else in the film does.

The only things I don't like about the movie are how unrealistic the quiz show is and the fact that there's too much score in it. There are a lot of scenes that could have used less music.

The monologue IMO is the best part of the film.

That was three hours?!?

Holy crap I had no idea. I just finished it. It didn't feel nearly that long.

Well, I guess I really liked it!

"I know! It takes, like, forever to listen to him."

reply

Absolutely. I usually check how much time there's left in a movie but this one never felt like it was starting to drag.
