Progressive Porn

I actually think this is a really good film, mainly because Spacey’s character journey and performance is fantastic, and the performances across the board are also great.

But… I can’t help laughing at how this is middle class whites flagellating themselves for pleasure and then showering themselves in Oscars for doing such a good job.

The most hilarious aspect of pure Progressive Porn is Colonel Fitts - a tough Southern retired colonel who hates gays and batters his son… turns out to be a closet homosexual 🤣🤣 It’s as crude as watching a Neo-Nazi drawing a Jew with a big nose and grubbing hands, drooling as he sketches.

Meanwhile, of course, the two gay guys have a perfect, healthy relationship, with big beaming smiles - no dysfunction in that household 🤣

The wife of the colonel is basically a zombie-ghost because she’s not getting any - that was a bit over-cooked despite an undeniably good performance. Come on, countless Muslim women have to walk around in black bags, have zero rights and get routinely battered by their husbands who plough women/dudes/kids on the side - they’re not permanently walking around in a near catatonic state.

Janey was such an awful daughter you have to wonder if the film is actively trying to discourage having a family. She was a relentless dragon who treated her dad like dogshit. She deserved the slap she got from her (dysfunctional cheating bitch) mom, but I’d like to have seen Spacey put that ungrateful brat in her place.

Ah well, at least Birch and Suvari got their cans out and we got to see Spacey go from hilarious loser to no-shits-given alpha dog. It’s a unique mix of drama, comedy and thriller, and it actually comments on life and dares to push boundaries (a dad nearly screws his teen daughter’s best friend??) For all its crude Progressive Porn it’s infinitely better than anything Hollywood churns out today.

I posted something along these lines years ago. I totally agree with you.

Good point well made.

Although it’s the writer who’s gay, not the director - Sam Mendes was married to Kate Winslet for many years.

I think Angela is supposed to be 16, maybe 17 at the most, they're both still in high school.

It's one of my favorite films, sure it paints certain characters in an unfair way. Not every ex-military man is a closet homo that beats his kids. And of course, gay couples have the same issues straight couples have etc..

It's a work of fiction, but everything is so disastrously charming that you get glued to the TV when you watch it.

I think the best performance was from Annette Bening. Mena was really good too. Spacey acts kind of similar in many of the films I've seen him in. Plus, now that the cats outta the bag and it's been confirmed that Spacey is gay, it makes his character less intriguing.

But nevertheless, AB is a great movie.

Ew, you’re right - I think it’s Ricky who was 18, Angela would be 16 - the film is encouraging ephebophilia, making us root for a protagonist to self-actualise by ploughing a teen. Progressives have moved on since then and are now trying to destigmatise paedophilia 🤦🏻‍♂️

It’s ironic that Spacey starred in a film that demonises a closet homosexual when that’s exactly what he was at the time. I bet he got off on playing a straight guy who denies the advances of a gay redneck.

Bening was great, but again, she was such a miserable shrieking Karen it’s like the gay writer and star were trying to discourage men from hetero relationships, while hinting ‘You wanna be happy? Try sucking some dick and you can be like those two gays - the only people on this street with zero problems and permanent smiles!’

Ricky might be under 18 too. They all go to the same school. lol..

Anyhow, are we supposed to root for Lester? haha... maybe so but that would also mean we are cheering for a guy that wants to sleep with his daughter's friend, which happens to be an underage girl. And I don't think anyone is trying to de-stigmatize pedophilia. Older/younger relations have been written about in books and portrayed in films for as long as writing and films have been around.

Most of the time, it's not shown in a positive light either. It's usually seen as something kind of dastardly. haha...

Although, it's a little bit glamorized in AB. Which, any man could probably relate to this. Haven't we all wanted to... ohh nevermind...

I'm not sure what was going through Spacey's head when he made this film other than "cha-ching" you know... that sweet sound that comes with depositing a large check into your back account.

Bening is really good at playing this type of character. She really nailed it.

And no comment on the dick remark. :)
