Am I the only one who thinks this movie is overrated?

I don't think its a bad movie at all. I actually think its pretty good, but I don't see why it's so highly regarded by so many people. However, there are a few movies that I like but don't love that nearly everyone else has in their top 10 such as....

Gladiator
Fight Club
Platoon
Kill Bill Vol 1&2
The Green Mile
A Beautiful Mind

Juvenile post. A quick look at your posting history shows that you are especially obsessed with the ratings of various movies. Be aware, any time someone does what you are doing here, you are saying "My opinion is more important than the opinions of the rest of you."

Ratings are just summaries of what the vast cross-section of movie fans think about a movie, if it is done honestly then a movie can never be "overrated" or "underrated."

Sometimes I think we're alone in the universe, and sometimes not.

Your post is not only juvenile, but also pathetic. American Beauty sucks balls, by the way.

all those movies are "all on the table for all to see" and totally different from AB

I hated it when I saw it at 12 but now as an adut is not just uncomfortable (to the point of being shrill...even cruel) it's gorgeous-looking, emotionally resonant, and--while using extremes--touches on suburban dystopia and the masks people wear to get through life. And it has a great cast.

The story is rich.

By the posts I'm reading, apparently not. Personally, I think it's incredible.

I saw it when it came out and it did absolutely nothing for me (and I went in fully expecting to love it). Frankly I thought it was complete bulls--t, dressed up to look important. So yes, I suppose I'd say it's overrated.

I wouldn't call it overrated, its not the best movie I have ever seen but it's high up there. I saw this last year in one of my school classes, we had to write and essay on it and i thought it was really good. There is lot's of symbolism, even some stuff my teacher pointed out about the way the house was represented and stuff. I really liked the ending which was very chilling but powerful. I guess at the end of the day it's all subjective, and what a person likes.

It's in my top 50 for sure, but none of those others are (except FC). 1999 was an amazing year for mainstream studio films.

I thought it was quite good but not quite as 'fuss-worthy' as critics made it out to be.
Like another person mentioned, I liked the symbolism in it. I liked how even if we disliked the characters, we could at least understand SOME aspect of their lives.

I too saw this film when I was in my 20s, and again in my 40s.
I think its geared more towards people in their 30s or later.....it just has that 'midlife questions' quality that we can relate to.

Lastly, I liked how none of the characters were perfect yet they all start out being portrayed as THINKING that they are. And working so hard to maintain the outward illusions.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

As I wrote in my comments 17 years ago, when I was 53, " The reason I say this movie is not for youngsters is because they have not lived enough to comprehend and identify with the characters. "
