Because Precious still got ''welfare''. Lived in section 8 housing and even found a half way house to take care of herself and her kids. Antwone Fisher had to sleep out on the streets, was starving and witnessed his friends killing during an attempted robbery. His motivation for bettering himself was higher than hers. He joined the Military because he had no choice. Precious had government provided food and housing though all of poor quality. Because of this it was easier for to escape in fantasy rather than getting a job. Both characters (and they are both based on real people) had trauma. But it manifested differently due to vastly different circumstances.
