Why does Gandalf look so ill when saving Faramir from being burnt alive?

When Gandalf and Pippin save Faramir from bad dad Denethor, Gandalf looks noticeably different with his baggy eyes and drained look, is it due to losing his staff? Or had Ian McKellen been on the booze the night before?

After that scene with Denethor, Gandalf looks fine again.

Keep in mind this is right after the Witch King of Angmar almost takes him out, Gandalf’s power is drained and is in the process of recharging at this point, his appearance takes note. Either that or makeup department missed it.

I wish there was a short scene showing his powers diminish, giving him that tired look before he rides in to save Faramir.

I thought it was the light from the burning funeral pyre reflected in his eyes.
