We all make bad decisions sometimes. And sometimes those decisions haunt us. This is one of those times. We live and we learn

A few theories...

I felt like it was a kind of test or to prove his worth since he was one of the "new ones" in the group and so was expected to help out in a big way by doing it. Why Sal didn't suggested the French guy I am unsure.

The other thing is that Sal might have been doing the naughty with other men when she goes into town with them, and they knew it, and wanted Richard (who was becoming so liked by everyone) to do it too.

Maybe Richard was becoming too much the center of attention and everyone wanted him to go away for a while. It might have been discussed by a sub-group behind his back beforehand. Perhaps they have seen it happen with others and they need a break from the island or it leads to trouble.

Possibly, they thought Richard was getting to be a bit too much in the group and hoped he would decide to stay back in town and not come back.
