Sex with Sal

How did Richard even find the fortitude to have sex with her? She was ugly and nasty and probably smelled like a cadavers bunghole.

I don't think I could touch her if she was the last girl on the island.

Tilda didn´t look too great in this movie, but I think she is quite striking in real life and I probably would have hit it. What people are forgetting is, I don´t think Richard had a choice. She knew about him drawing the map so he had to appease her by having sex with her.

I'm pretty sure Richard and Sal don't even have sex in the book.
The only mention of sex in Garland's novel is between Etienne and Francoise

reply

As I recall Richard and Sal do have sex in the book, but Richard and Francoise DO NOT. That's what bothered me. If you had Virginie Ledoyen laying down for you, why you even want to waste anything on Tilda Swinton? It made more sense in the book though. Sal was more attractive and charismatic, Richard didn't look like DiCaprio, and Francoise didn't look like Virginie Ledoyen.

When did sal and Richard have sex in the book? He went on the rice run with Jed, a character who was completely taken out of the film (which pissed me off). So sal wasn't even on the rice run with him...

reply

Sal was more attractive in the book? Unless I just misinterpreted something, he described her as an odd-looking female Buddha.

reply

Nah, Tilda Swinton is a hot lay...

She's a beautiful woman and in many shots looks as healthy as any of them there. It was just the wicked nature of her character that was nasty.

Two of the biggest sell-outs in the movie were Richard hooking up with Françoise and Richard then having sex with Sal. I much prefer the book version in which his desire for Françoise went unrealised, and that Sal was never much more than a slightly bossy unsexual matriarch of the group. But getting back to the movie I simply don't buy why Richard would consent to a one-night illicit bonk with that androgynous lizard, especially when he had sexy young Françoise waiting for him, and also why Bugs didn't destroy Richard when their bonk became common knowledge, as per the previous threat for him to keep his dick in his pants.

Because Richard was a gormless horny 12-year-old in a 20-something's body, and after months isolated on an island in a tiny community where everyone sees, hears and knows your business, even Virginie Ledoyen's affections would grow tedious and samey to a selfish uncharismatic horny goat boy.

Sal was convenient, necessary to please, and a passive mode of vengeance against someone Richard hated (Bugs). That's all. If she hadn't wanted in his pants, I expect Richard would've found some other bit of skirt in the nightclub crowd to have his way with before they returned to the island. Change of scenery, so to speak. He spends most of the film waffling on about new experiences and adventure and not getting stagnant. Francoise could hardly expect better, and she had some nerve to go postal about it when she'd done the exact same thing to Étienne with Richard.

The mirror... it's broken.
Yes, I know. I like it that way. Makes me look the way I feel.
