First and second half of the film have a totally different tone

Characters were over the top and cartoonish in the first half of the film. So many eccentric people arrive in scenes. This provided a buffet of entertainment for Enid to smirk at. But then the tone changes...

The more time goes by, the less ''funny'' everything becomes. The world seems to settle into a much much serious and semi bleak place. No more eccentric characters. Friendship's deteriorate. This could be interpreted as seeing things from the perspective of Enid. The high school fun and games are over and the real world, the adult world, or the '' ghost world'' just isn't much fun anymore.

This is a pretty good interpretation of what it's like the enter the adult world. It's a smack in the face.

When I was younger I was a sarcastic wise ass. I was usually more quick witted then most people that I encountered so I was able to verbally castrate most people on command. I use to goof on everyone, and everything. As I got older I realized that a lot of the time I was pretty much a dick. I look back on my younger self, and I REALLY dislike the person that I was.

It's kind of unnerving to me when I bump into people from my past, and they expect me to still be that person. Some of them enjoyed watching me behave like that. I cringe when I look back on those times.

I remember years ago on IMDB that someone said of this film "I use to watch this film and pity Seymour, and then I became him." I feel like that sometimes. The change in tone of this film is what really stood out to me when I initially watched it all those years ago. I liked Thora's character a lot. I thought to myself "if only I could meet a girl like that." Well, after dating more girls like that than I'd like to admit, I can honestly say that I do not want a girl like that. LOL I was attracted to her character because as a teen, and early 20 something I was a lot like her (the main difference was that I had a great job, and an insane work ethic).

These days, personality wise, I'm closer to Seymour than anyone else in this film. I wish I would have had more hindsight when I was younger, and more empathy for others, but I was young, carefree, and dumb.
