Laney was chosen for the bet because she was average hot

A long shot to make popular, but not impossible.

She's totally hot, not just average hot.

Yeah, the pretty girl with a great body and friendly is such a long shot. lol I'd like to make bets with you. Such an honor system.

reply

Even under that makeup and glasses she was still hot. That was my problem with the film. They had to work at making her unattractive.

reply

Not Another Teen Movie spoofed this element really well when the popular boy is disgusted and deems it impossible to turn her into a prom queen because "she has glasses...and a ponytail!"

reply

In Hollywood, glasses make you look really horrific. Luckily its easily fixed. It just take some cool, popular kid to talk the character into taking the glasses off and everything is better.

reply

Unattractive is Danny Devito in a wig not RLC.

This movie is so typical of Hollywood

Take a conventionally gorgeous actress and try to pass her off as the nerdy ugly duckling

I still like the movie, it's one of the all-time great teen movies, but it's typical of the genre. Most of them would give actual teens very negative self-image issues if they compared themselves to the hot af actors or actresses (almost always in their mid or late 20s or 30s)

Hipster chicks nowadays all wear thick-rimmed glasses and overalls and still have guys drooling over them. Nothing about this movie relates to the actual HS teen experience. The best teen movie I can think of is maybe Dazed and Confused, and even that isn't super-realistic

Good point. I don't think anyone truly watched this film and said, "wow, this is apt and accurate." Laney would have little to no trouble in the real world with dating or boys, even if she wore glasses.
