Åmål-like movies?

*beep* Åmål is one of the most touching movies I've ever seen. I fact, I don't believe any movie ever touched me this much. And when it ended, I wanted more. I want to know if there is anything else like it out there. I know this is a very subjective question, but anyone who's seen *beep* Åmål will understand what kind emotional quality I am seeking.

The only movie I've seen so far that had a similar effect on me was Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.

I know there are recommendations under each title, but they don't stand for much. I was recommended Cruel Intentions and that doesn't even belong in the same galaxy with *beep* Åmål.

I'd urge you to see "The Dreamlife Of Angels". A masterpiece of emotional cinema.

Also, "Breaking The Waves", "Gas Food Lodging" and "L'homme du Train".

I agree 100% with you for mentioning The Dreamlife of Angels (La vie revee des anges) and Man On the Train (L'homme du train). These 2 films have an "emotional impact" after you've watched them. I don't mean this in the the context of emotional impact ala-Dancer in the Dark (which Lilya 4-ever also has, also by Lukas Moodysson), just that they leave you feeling different and rethinking stuff about life after you've watched them. I know what I've just said sounds corny, and I'm never eloquent and articulate, never know how to say things properly..all I know is you have to see The Dreamlife of Angels, and L'homme du train if you loved Show Me Love.

I am thinking that Water Lilies, George Washington, and Angela are like this movie in a strange ethereal way. Water Lilies definitely though.

How about GHOST WORLD?

I would recommend "Au Revoir Les Enfants". It's not similar in story, but I had a similar feeling at the end of it all, like I had just watched something truly special.

Yes Ghost World! Although would rate Amal much higher but Ghost world is a good reco for a similar feel movie.

I would like to suggest shelter. A beautiful, moving film about a young man who finds comfort in surfing with his best friend's brother, when family obligations stand in the way of his personal dreams.

Not an easy question, as FÅ seems to be pretty unique. You already mentioned Eternal Sunshine, but I think Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain is more similar to FÅ. After this, go see My Sassy Girl (avoid the remake).

Then there is Låt den rätte komma in, my favorite movie of 2008, and the top movie of its genre. It's superficially very different, but there is the same quirky sense of romance.

Punch-Drunk Love is another wacky romance, though not very much like FÅ really.

Water lillies

which is a far more darker and artier version of Show me love

Water Lilies is pretty good, I almost recommended it. Wouldn't consider it all that dark, it's more stylish than dark. Gorgeously shot, to be sure. Dark would be something like Heavenly Creatures imho...

I would also recommend All Over Me. Not on par with *beep* Amal but a good film and definitely a pinch of darkness to it.

Let the Right One In was very similar in a lot of ways. I'd recommend that one. It has a similar sort of quality to it as well as a sort of realistic approach to it. It's a very sweet little film, as well as scary and challenging in some ways. I really appreciated it. The novel is really good too. I highly recommend that one!

Together, Lukas Moodysson's follow-up picture to this, had a similar sort of dark humor to it that this one did. I think it might actually be my favorite film of Moodysson's actually. It's a really moving, unique film. One thing I really appreciated a lot about it was how it refused to turn any characters into stereotypes. It's a much more dark, intense film than Show Me Love as it deals with more heavy subject matter, but it's definitely still a feel-good film and I highly recommend it.

If you like the way the film was photographed, I'd recommend a lot of Bergman's films, particularly Persona and Cries and Whispers. Beware, they are both very dark films. They don't have the same light feel-good quality that Show Me Love has. Only the same kind of look to them.

There's this Danish film I've seen a few times actually called You Are Not Alone, which is similar in humor and tone to Show Me Love, about two young boys at a boarding school who fall in love and how their friends are cool with it. It's actually a pretty tastefully done little coming-of-age film that I enjoyed quite a bit. It's also very erotic, but not in a perverted or exploitative kind of way. It's more of a naturalistic kind of film, if you catch my drift.
