Sony's Marvel movie predated the MCU, but paved the way for the kinds of superheroes — and release dates — that still rule the box office.

And before that, Jaws and Star Wars.

But, yes, this was the big start of the superhero trend. X-Men and Blade a little bit, too, but Spider-Man moreso.
