I noticed all the posts are from when imdb was around (and yes I really do miss that site), but I thought this movie was really thought provoking.

Nobody really had a clear conscience. Leo was mixed in with the wrong crowd and disappointed and scared his mother. Willie is a double murder and tried to kill his friend and probably getting a life sentence. Erica lost her life for no justifiable reason. And frank who probably wouldnt face any time for his business stuff faces the most ironic and severe punishment. Knowing he had a role to play in his daughters death. (when he told Willie about the {mostly likely made up] story of frank and erica when they were 15. I don't know if he ever comes clean to his wife about that.

So thoughts on the movie for any movie chat users and fans?

James Gray is a very underrated writer/director. We Own The Night is one of my favorite movies of all time. And this one, Two Lovers, and the Lost City of Z are all very well made movies

He's a great actor but his character was the most thought provoking. Since technically wahlberg (Leo) is the protagonist and he doesn't help him along the way and causes him tremendous problems he ironically suffers the worst penalty of all (the loss of his daughter, and being at fault for it).

Really like it, not Directors James Gray best work especially about the criminal underworld. I prefer his debut Little Odessa and We Own the Night to the Yards. But The Yards has a lot going for it, Joaquin Phoenix is great in it (and first of four films with Gray) and I love stuff when it kind of Veers away from mobster life but into Union corruption. It's probably a tad overlong and think they could have gotten a stronger actor in Mark Wahlberg's role (I think he's a lot better in We Own The Night). But you got early 20's Charlize Theron at her hottest and the late James Caan doing some good work.

If you want a masterpiece James Gray/Joaquin Phoenix film, check out Two Lovers. Such a heartbreaking film.
