How did this show escape ....

How did this show not get screamed at by the racists who are complaining about the latest version of The Little Mermaid? Were we just lucky?

its not too late to fire it up here now.

HEY! Why is she black?? COME ON!! :D :D :D

What I am curious about.... are there a ton of black people who were longing for a black cinderella? None of my black friends ever ever EVER mentioned wanting a black version of any white entertainment. Mostly, they didn't care, and no on brought it up.... because none of us were racists. But now, EVERYONE's a racist

So, I was more a complainer about the royal family than I was of Cinderella herself. I get it's a fantasy but you still have to have some logical set of rules or else it's just a free for all. So you had the white king, a black queen and an asian prince. Now...I have nothing wrong with ANY of these actors but I did find it ridiculous that Whoopie's character as soooooo pressed for the prince to get married so she could have grand kids when, obviously, the prince was adopted and if Whoopie wanted grandkids, she could easily just adopt more. lol

As for the 'Cinderella is black' this isn't the same as the Little Mermaid...at least to me. My reasoning is this Cinderella is NOT based off of Disney's Cinderella. This was an adaptation of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical that was originally created in the 1950s. It originally starred Julie Andrews in the lead. More people may be more familiar with the 1960s version starring Leslie Ann Warren. So by the time this movie was in development, it had already been adapted twice with 2 white women. I found nothing wrong with a new team wanting a modern version and with Whitney Huston on board, they can cast anyone they wanted. This casting was NOT a case of casting a black girl to be 'inclusive' it was...this is the team...this is the direction we want to go. I wasn't a fan of this particular adaptation because I preferred the 1960s version personally but this one had some great moments.

The reason The Little Mermaid is getting hate is because Disney is doing a frame for frame copy of the original movie using the same character names and music, production design etc. If that is the case, Ariel should look like her cartoon counterpart. It's an IP thing and that's just my opinion. They didn't do this to Belle, they didn't do this to Aladdin (accept for changing Jafar and he was awful and should have been older). In fact, it bothers me they are so lazy to just re-create the cartoon but only seam to change one thing to look 'diverse'. I don't think that's cool or created.

they SHOULD have created an all new version of The Little Mermaid with Hailey playing her own new character. Don't name her Ariel, name her something else. Give it all NEW music that people will love and want to add to their Disney collection. What they did here is put Hailey into a very tight and specific box and essentially put her in the middle of a very heated debate that is none of her fault. she deserved a film that was well thought out, different and still a Disney classic. I would have preferred something more like Disney's real live action Cinderella where they didn't use the music, gave the character her own story to play with. Make it her own. I can tell with the trailer and her singing 'Part of Your World' she needed to sound 'just like Ariel' and not like Hailey and that makes me sad.

anyway, Brandy's Cinderella was using a more generic Cinderella not based on a specific IP. Not quite the same as Disney doing their specific live action Little Mermaid.
