Isn't he a little old to have been a fighter pilot in WWI? He must've been in his late 50s or even older.

Good point. The movie was set in 1926, and the actor was 72 in 1999 when it was made. So even if we pretend he was portraying a character, say, ten years younger, he'd still have been 50 at the end of the war. I don't know about the RFC, but the Americans at least had a maximum age of 25 for its pilots. In the British army, the cut-off age was 41.
