Wasn't he a little OLD for her?

I loved the movie, but I found the whole romance btwn those two a bit far fetched. How could she go from that guy she dated in the begining of the movie to this old guy? He looked like he could be her father, or even grandfather. I think they should have made him up to look younger, or her to look older, because it just seemed wierd. Agree?

Glad you cleared that up. I wasn't aware of that factoid.

reply

A factoid is something that sounds like a fact but actually isn't true... It's not another word for fact.

reply

I thought a factoid was just a really small fact.

Movies always have old guys getting younger women. (Please notice I didn't say girls.)
Especially older movies. (More acceptable back then? Bogie & Bacall ring any bells? She was 19 to his 45? 50?)

It's usually Cary Grant or some handsome fella kissing Audrey Hepburn. You can almost see that happening.
But if Mickey Rourke's mackin on Hermione, nobody's buying it.

I've heard numbers like half the man's age + 7 is acceptable/not gross.
I'm almost 60 and now I find out this woman I like is 33, so I don't know.

This ain't a movie, and I'm more Nicholson than Grant.

Maybe she had enough of the immature reactions of younger men, like: "to much reality for one night".

reply

Well if you need any proof in relation to Jack's charisma and attractiveness, you just have to recognise the fact that Hunt and Nicholson dated after this film was made.

Yes, Jack was 60 when this was made but who cares, he's still sexy and oozes charisma...and I'm much younger than Carol's character in the film.

So its not far fetched, it's just Jack.

reply

From looks, maybe yes, but I think there isnt one person in Hollywood who could have portrayed Melvin as Nicholson did. And besides, the guy at the start was a morron. The question should be how a great women like her could date an emptyhead like that in the first place.

I've had a crush on Jack Nicholson for YEARS, ever since I was about 19, and I'm 30 this year. He's incredibly sexy, even as an old man. And believe me, I don't find myself attracted to old men usually. But there's something about Nicholson that oozes charm and charisma, he's very sexy.

I would have guessed that Hunt's character was around 40-45 in the movie (even though she had a young son), and Nicholson was 60. Fifteen years is ok during a midlife crisis. But then I find out that Helen Hunt was only 34 when this was made. Whoaaa.

reply

I agree. Once that whole love thing came between them, I was so distracted by the implausibility of it all.

reply

Are you kidding? That's Jack Nicholson! HE DATES women that age! Even now!

Had Jack Bauer been a Spartan, the movie would be called "1"

Exactly!!!
He's rich. Says what he thinks and doesn't give a hoot. Dates young women. Have I described the character? No. I've described JACK NICHOLSON!!

reply

didn't you describe both, actually? both fit that description...

I wouldn't date anyone that much younger than me. I might date someone 5 years younger than me but no more than that. If I were 45 years old I would not date someone in their 20s or early 30s.

Wait til you're 60 and still single; you may change your mind about that. ;-)

I'm sixty-six and find that women between forty and sixty-five appeal to me now more than those under forty. Women in their twenties seem like children. No woman under fifty-five or sixty could conceivably be interested in me now because I'm not rich or great looking. If I were rich I'd be suspicious of any younger woman's attention. Many rich men don't mind what their younger partner's motivation is, as long as they're getting laid and have a trophy to show off, but I couldn't bear to know a woman was with me because of the money.
