What causes the captain of a spaceship to speak Latin? In need for help or to warn others I'd prefer a more common language...

It’s the doctor who knows it. What’s weird is that Sam Neil’s character didn’t know it and the fact that his team didn’t find out. One guy randomly heard it and said right away. That’s Latin!
