movie spoiled by liv tyler

This movie really had some fantastic moments but i could barely stand to finish it because of liv tyler's terrible acting. Fiennes really was robbed of a swell performance because it was overshadowed by such a dismal performance by Liv.

She wore the same face throughout the entire movie despite all of the dramatic events which happened to her and I could not force myself to believe onegin really loved her because Live didn't not sell herself more than a retarded girl who mopes around all day. I really think Liv is capable of smaller rolls in movies less complex but this role really was too much of an undertaking for her to be fair.

I thought she was fine in the role. She looked beautiful and serious most of the time, but that's what I gathered was the demeanor of the character. I thought she did fine portraying emotions in several of the scenes that demanded it.

The Russian Guild of Film Critics named her "Best Foreign Actress" in 1999 for this performance.

I find Liv quite beautiful ... yes, she's unconventional but to me that's a good thing.

I think they could have probably found a better actress for the role but she did have a few scenes in which she was wonderful. What I most liked about her in the movie was that she seemed so innocent and young as opposed to Finnes who was older and very imposing. That really played very well within the movie.

While I would have prefered Kate Winslet in the role, Liv was far better then what I expected.

Of course the movie could not ever match the intensity a Russian production with Russian actors would have brought to it but this was a Hollywood film and, by far, one of the good ones.

I found her lovely in the role.-

First of all I enjoyed this movie. I don't think that Liv spoiled the movie as far as looks. I couldn't imagine any other American actresses in this film, because they could not pass as being Russian. I myself am Russian girl, and this being a movie taking the place in Russia, they could have got someone like Elizaveta Boyarskaya, or another Russian acctress for this lead part in my mind...

WronG!

Liv is Beautiful. Her doe eyes have just the right melancholy air for the part.

She was poised, graceful and lovely in key moments:

-the scene where Tatyana' writes a letter is spectacular.

-Liv was a knock-out in that red ball dress.

-Top Notch: a series of subjective close-ups of the line of her neck, shoulders and shawl from Onegin's point of view.

I'm not a big fan of Liv tyler (imo a vulgar actress) i don't like her at all but in this movie she did it really well. Captures the complexity of the character in a very simple way, Tatyana is young not retarded she is falling in love and we can feel that with Tyler's acting (at least in my case i can feel it). When we are young we sometimes seem fools

I wouldn't go so far as to say she ruined the film, but I didn't think she could quite hold her own opposite Fiennes. Unlike some of the posters here, I thought she looked perfect for the part, and I thought she was quite good up until the return to St. Petersburg. But at that point, when the story became more about the history and tragedy of the situation (gotta love Russian literature!), I just didn't see the depth of emotion coming from her, the way it did from Fiennes. (And I'm not talking about "emoting"/tears/etc.; I'm talking about layers of restrained emotion conveyed in an expression, that sort of thing.) When they see each other again at the ball, I didn't get much of anything from her, and I'm pretty sure I should have.

I hadn't seen Fiennes in anything for awhile, and then I watched this and was reminded of what a spectacular actor he is.

I agree with your observations on Liv Tyler's inability to portray this character. I blame casting decisions rather than her as an actress or her level of beauty. I just find it funny that your measured but emphatic criticism quickly degenerates into insulting nonsense. Text book example of the hostility trip wire in these spaces.

I can't remember a single Liv Tyler film that I liked. Bad, bad actress.

I thought Liv Tyler was great in the role. If there is anybody to blame for your feelings about her blame the director. Liv was following directions.
