The truth

It was a student film. That was all the actors agreed to perform in. Film makers tried to make it bigger (possibly to capitalize on DiCaprio and Maguire's rising fame). DiCaprio and Maguire blocked the film from major release since that wasn't what they agreed to.

No one is "suppressing art". You cannot change the terms of the medium you have an actor perform in without their consent and agreement.

This is not the truth. Don's Plum was never a short film or a student film - we had everyone's agreement. Leo agreed to be in the film and he agreed to it being a feature length film. I was there for every minute of it. Leo was an academy award nominee at the time we made this movie - you really think he's going to do student films? Apply some common sense, sir. [R115], I would love if Don's Plum came back to haunt him this award season. The whole reason he's getting the Oscar is because people feel bad that he never won. Perhaps if they saw what a monster he actually is they wouldn't feel so bad. And the whole Gaga debacle showed that he hasn't matured, just had better PR training.

But, yes, let's coronate the man who destroyed a friend's career and blocked his film because he couldn't control his personality disorder on-screen for two hours.

Reading freedonsplum now. The thing that stands out the most to me is how Tobey Maguire talks. Can he complete a full sentence without the use of "like" and "you know?" Some of the quoted speech from him shows ridiculously heavy use of both terms.
