WTF?? People From Florida Don't Sound Like This!!!

This was a phenomenal movie that completely caught me off guard, but the only thing that I didn't like about this film were the crappy accents. I grew up in Florida (namely in Duval County, where Keannu talks about being a prosecutor for 5 years)and people just don't have accents like that. I even spent many, many weekends in Gainesville (Alachua County)visiting family and even there, people just don't sound like that. Not everybody from the South speaks like they're from Alabama or Texas. I know that it's just a movie, but talk about flat out annoying.

Where'd y'all go to schyuel?

Hahaha. You people crack me up. I guaruntee you have accents. I grew up in Pennsylvania and have often spent my summers with family in both Florida and Virginia and a large majority of people in both states have accents. Just because it's normal to you doesn't mean the rest of the country doesn't hear it.

I would say I don't have an accent but I'm sure I sound different to you. Any where you go from Maine to Florida to California have different accents. It's just a fact.

I know what you mean about the accents..when I first saw the movie I assumed he was from Alabama or maybe Georgia. I am a North Carolinian born and bred and I know we have accents no doubt about that, but I've visited Florida several times and I've never heard anyone down there sound like that! Not to say there isn't some backwoods town where people do talk like that in Florida, but still

Oh yes, in the rural part of Northern Florida people do indeed have Southern accents. But, when it comes to accents in Florida the farther South you go, the farther North you go. Know what I mean?

reply

Thank you! I grew up in Jacksonville, and I've been all over Florida, and I've never encountered any native Floridian with that heavy an accent. If anything, Floridians have a more mixed speech, with more twang than drawl. I understand they wanted to portray Keanu Reeves' character as a good ole' Southern boy, but then make him from the South. Florida may be South but it's not THE South.

I'm not from down there, but I've been to Florida several times and don't remember them having accents. Of course I was near Disney World so maybe I was meeting everyone else but Floridians. But I kept wondering why do they sound like they are from Texas or something.

All depends on where in Florida. There be some hardcore rednecks down there.
