This movie reminded me of....

This movie reminded me a lot of The Cube. Anyone else get that vibe?

As for the movie itself, it was a little overhyped, but a solid movie.

About the Cube - haven't seen it but the logline sounds similar although there are some major differences too.

About the hype no - don't agree at all. In fact I don't even remember hearing about Dark City at all. The only reason I even saw it was coz a friend made me watch her vhs copy one time.

Now when it comes to overhyped nothing can beat the Matrix!!!

Cube is a film that I haven't seen for a long while and would like to see again. My recollections are that it reminded me more of the sort of film that influenced stuff like the Saw series rather than Dark City.

The only vibe I got was the Conehead vibe. Talk about ripping off a movie. From the way the Strangers were situated in their meeting place, to the spasmodic snickering and to the big face on the wall. I was waiting for the leader to yell out: "Therefore, you will... NARFLE THE GARTHOK!"

You remind me of The Cube!
What cube?!
The Cube with the power...
What power?!
The power of voodoo!
Who do?!
You do!
Do what?!
Remind me of the cube!

It reminds me of "A feasibility study" from the Outer Limits.

It reminds me of Touch Of Evil with Charleton Heston and Orson Welles or a Hitchcock movie.

reply

Interesting, now I want to check those out.

reply

Just finished it and must make a correction. I will not spoil it by revealing the ending but instead of Hitchcock (he never did syfy), it makes me think of something from The Outer Limits or Twilight Zone. It takes an effort to stay with it but it is worth it.

In the Outer Limits (A feasibility study), Aliens take a city from the earth into space to try and determine if using humans for labor purposes would work. Something like that.....I thought Dark City was a decent movie.

reply

Same here. I am glad I stayed with it until it got going. I am a fan also of film noir.

This movie reminds me of.....

1) Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone - a similar overall atmosphere/vibe.
2) The Truman Show (released later the same year) - the "searching for Shell Beach" scenes and the general idea of manipulating someone's reality for ulterior motives.
3) The Matrix (1999) - obviously the sets, but especially the final "showdown" scenes.
4) Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) - for re-creating the 1930s/1940s, the CGI, and the "imagination runs amok" atmosphere/vibe.

I got this and Matrix confused... black coats and weirdness....

went to this by mistake and LOVED it! Realized it wasn't the matrix at all, which I then went to and loved that too.
but this film has some specialness to it, I feel.
