Lack of Plausibility In Having Cyril Do Ryan's Dirty Work On The Outside.

Given that Ryan O'Reily was established as a connected Irish mobster in the first season, I always found it a bit of a stretch that he would rely on his mentally handicapped, kind heartened brother to murder Gloria's husband. It seemed overly contrived to get Cyril in Oz. Anyone else share the same thoughts?

Connected doesn't mean he was in the mob. It's been a while since I watched Oz but I am beginning to re-watch it. But off the top of my head I don't remember ever seeing any scenes that showed Ryan in the irish mob. I think his brother and him were just thugs with connections..looking out for each other.

It was established in the first season that Ryan was connected to the Irish mob, which had dealings with the Italian mob on the outside. The bad blood between him and Dino Ortolani is what landed Dino in prison for shooting Ryan. Ryan was also seen attending a mobster's funeral during a flashback of Cyril's accident in the second season.
Ryan was invested in the drug trade at Oz and had connections on the street and with the Irish guard that helped him dispose of his enemies. I still firmly believe it was a stretch for Ryan to rely on Cyril to murder Gloria's husband given Ryan's other connections. But perhaps on second thought, his connections on the street would have probably refused to commit a crime of passion on a civilian.

I guess for me being in the mob would show ryan with a crew like we saw with dino, and schibetta and the other italians. Which we never really see. So i always thought of ryan as guy with connections to people in the irish mob than an actual mob guy like we see in the movies "the departed" and "Black Mass". But i remember all those examples you gave.
