White Squall: "Dead Poets Society" of the High Seas

The similarities between these two movies is astounding...<spoilers>
Consider the following:
1) Ragtag group of youngsters come together under the careful tutelage of Jeff Bridges/Robin Williams
2) At the end of the movie, a tragedy involving a death of a student precipitates an out-for-blood inquest that tries to scapegoat the teacher.
3) The students rally behind their teacher at the last minute....

White Squall is based on a true story ... I'm not sure if The Dead Poets Society is.

Even though one may be fictional, they sound the same. Lots of movies are like that. Usually there are a few ruthless kids in the story and in the end they stand behind each other and there's a happy ending. I like White Squall. It's one of the few movies I have.

*Spoilers for both movies*

One big difference: The suicide in DPS was contrived and no sense as to why he would do such a thing. He shot himself because he had to go to military school? Give me a break!

In WS, the deaths were due to a catastrophe, and were based on historical events. They were pretty accurate, from what I hear.

To me, that makes a huge difference in terms of quality, and of the overall story in general.

In real life suicide often makes no sense to the survivors; and its almost always sudden & shocking, just like in DPS. There were things going on in the mind/heart of the victim -- struggles or whatever -- that survivors can never know or understand.
