8 MM or TESIS?
The two films have the same subject - snuff movies, but I think TESIS is far superior to 8 MM. Wich one do you think is the best?
shareTesis is a much better film, more suspenseful, atmospheric, thrilling and original. Besides it came first.
Finally Joel Schumacher is a mediocre director while Alejandro Amenábar is a genius. I mean he shot Tesis when he was only 23 yo!
To echo ebs, "Videodrome," which whipped both of these films in virtually every category.
That being said, I preferred 8mm. I was expecting a horror movie when I bought Tesis (no video stores nearby offer a very diverse selection of foreign films, so when I want to see one I have to purchase it online). "Videodrome" and "8mm" both work much better as horror films. Tesis is more of a drama predicated on a horror movie premise (snuff films); 8mm leaves the viewer feeling tainted, similar to what Cage's character has just experienced. It's a thoroughly unpleasant glimpse at the ugly side of life. Tesis unfolds in a much more "gentle" manner and lacks the insight into the psyches of the emotionally disturbed that 8mm offered up.
I also thought that the message-- similar to 8mm's-- was delivered in a much more heavy-handed manner. Joaquin Phoenix's character utters that film's "thesis" in one sequence, and lets it rest; the ongoing plot point of Angela's cinematic violence paper makes the film's message come across as too in-your-face and sanctimonious.
