8 MM or TESIS?

The two films have the same subject - snuff movies, but I think TESIS is far superior to 8 MM. Wich one do you think is the best?

reply

Tesis is boring, has stupid and predictable story, characters are undeveloped, acting is bellow average and music sucks. It's a B horror all the way.I really expected more of 7+ rated movie.I liked few shots and cuts but that doesn't make it a good flick.I saw 8mm a long time ago but as i recall it was (much) better.I'm a big fan of The Others btw.

there are several films about snuff

- Tesis (Amenebar)
- Mute Witness (A. Walker)
- Videodrome (D. Cronenberg)
- Hardcore (not exactly snuff, but similar plot)

All 4 films are definately better than 8mm.
And it has nothing to do with Nicholas Cage - I like him.

they're both about snuff movies but they couldn't be more different. i don't think 8mm is a bad movie, but it's got much more to do with 'american girls' deceived into 'movie star careers' and then they fall into dangers like snuff films. in 'tesis' case, u never expect a good looking college boy to be a 'snuffer' (if there's such a word...if not...sorry =P). but come on, don't say 8mm is trash...

this statement is ridiculous. these boards really do start to wear after a time. how is a movie with no plot similarity whatsoever a "remake"?

the *only* common thread between the two movies is that they are about the idea of a snuff film. Why isnt Tesis a "remake" of Hardcore or Videodrome then?

The other really annoying thing is this sophomoric notion that, in order to seem "intelligent" about film, you must automatically repeat the mantra that "hollywood is garbage... hollywood is garbage".

Come on people - its ridiculous. all cinema has its moments of genius and moments of garbage and has produced both masterpieces and dogs. Hollywood has a FAR higher combination of volume, exposure, reach and native market than any other source so its product must be looked at in that context if you want to *actually* be an intelligent student of film.

As an experiment, ask the (always foreign) directors that are mindlessly, and reflexively, worshipped by the cliche waves of anti-hollywood drones who their inspiration is. I guarantee that there will be a hollywood director on the list every time. Conversely, ask any hollywood director who *their* inspiration is and I guarantee there will be foreign directors on the list.

The point is that film is a wonderful international medium that enables all people to exchange ideas and stimulate debate. The knee-jerk anti-Americanism (which is what the "anti-hollywood" crap is *really* about) is nauseating and ignorant.

I really appreciate what youve said on this thread. I was going to say something familiar but waited until I read it all to see if someone else had. I agree with you completely. I actually havent seen Thesis yet, but I plan to in the very near future (its kinda hard when you have a full Netflix Q with a "waiting list" behind that though).

I have seen 8mm and its in my top 10 films of all time. The path that Cage takes throughout the film just mounts and mounts until he explodes. He did that VERY well and I think its that factor alone that makes the movie. Most people cant see that and so it gets a rating lower than it deserves. I was lucky to have gotten to see it in the theatre at the time. The only part I can say that occasionally bugs me is Cage's initial reactions to the film; they seem off the mark (i.e. not synchronized with whats going on on the screen)and contrived, but its excellent in every other way imaginable. The acting is incredible and the score by Mychael Danna is absolutely amazing (I own it actually). Anyone who can call this movie trash hasnt really watched it. Its all about the emotion. Its all about the transition that Cage's character takes from mild-mannered "pick up a paycheck" drone to fiercely determined executioner. Also, the film speaks such truth about our society. Who WOULD care about some dumb girl who got herself into a mess however many years ago it was. DId you see all those names in the drawers he had to go through? Those are kids that will never be found and most people have given up on. If anything, its a gripping tale of the human condition

Well. I admit that 8MM isn't bad at all but for me tesis is the real winner.

Although my opinion could be very biased ( I'm spanish and a comvinced amenabar fan) I try to explain my reasons

First of all: They seem the same, but they aren't.
.-Forgetting the obvious (the plot around snuf movies) 8MM shows the ubiquous power of money. The critical idea in film "why he do it" - "because he can" is totally diferent from tesis main idea
.-TESIS shows the disociation of what we "think" about violence and what we "feel" about it. Tesis shows how appparently common people gets more or less fascinated with violence. It's not an apology of violence, but a declaration about the fascination on violence on 20th culture (more or less the same ancient fascination on fire, that today psychiatrics sets on piromans, for example)

Second :
.- The characters on 8MM, except for the Nicholas Cage one, are totally unnecesary. They are only "hooks" to the plot.

.- In TESIS, you get at least 4 interesting characters, with their own psycological traits: Angela, Chema, Bosco and Jorge Castro. And none of them is totally free of the sin of violence fascination, although two of the are "Good" and two are "Evil".

Personally I think the best interpretation in TESIS goes to Fele Martinez ( Chema) followed by far by Eduardo Noriega (Bosco). Ana Torrent (Angela) and Jorge (Xabier Elorriaga) are correct, but nothing more

And finally.

8MM its only another Private Inavestigation type film (very well) decorated with
a specially crude type of crime

Tesis is a reflexion about how violence live inside us (god thanks, more in some people than in the rest) but we can't/dont want to accept it publically

All of the above, obviously, IMHO

I will have to rewatch TESIS to decide.

I didn't feel such strong emotions with TESIS though as I didn't care for the victims and wasn't attached to Angela, I didn't feel dread when she may have been killed.

8 MM I thought was touching particular the scenes with the victims mother and I was 100% routing with Nicholas Cage to get revenge, I was pumped up.

I did get attached to Chema in TESIS though.

I need to watch again to make sure I fully understood the plot as their didnt seem to be much of relationship shown between Bosco and Jorge.

"TESIS" OF COURSE !

AMERICANS PLEASE LEAVE AMENEBAR ALONE !!!

Tesis, no question. The original idea was done in a manner that puts the audience in the middle of the pain, not on the outskirts.

If people like Tesis and they are not totally opposed to David Cronenberg they should watch Videodrome. VD is Cronenberg, I mean, absolutely unrealitic, but I think the 2 movies relate.

Good luck to Guido.
