I have to strongly disagree with the OP.
The movie was entertaining, and Belushi was perfectly cast. Sure, Belushi isn't the greatest actor in the world, but this role seemed almost written specifically for him, and he did a terrific job. The fact that he is sorta likable and fun in all his villainous behavior makes him stand out from the typical wife-beating bad guys. In the beginning we're sorta meant to like him a bit, then slowly we realize what a total disregard for human life he has, and in the end he got what he deserved.
This is one of Belushi's most memorable roles. While we're on the subject of Belushi action flicks that take place in the middle of nowhere, check out "Made Men" (1999). In that one Belushi plays the good guy going up against a crazy US sheriff played brilliantly by James Bond himself Timothy Dalton!
