James Belushi badly miscast

I liked this movie despite Belushi's rotten acting. He acted like an idiot rather than a bad-tempered chauvinist pig. He was the wrong actor for the part. Some actors just can't play some parts and he stuck out like a sore thumb in this. To enjoy this I had to try to ignore him as much as possible.

I have to strongly disagree with the OP.

The movie was entertaining, and Belushi was perfectly cast. Sure, Belushi isn't the greatest actor in the world, but this role seemed almost written specifically for him, and he did a terrific job. The fact that he is sorta likable and fun in all his villainous behavior makes him stand out from the typical wife-beating bad guys. In the beginning we're sorta meant to like him a bit, then slowly we realize what a total disregard for human life he has, and in the end he got what he deserved.

This is one of Belushi's most memorable roles. While we're on the subject of Belushi action flicks that take place in the middle of nowhere, check out "Made Men" (1999). In that one Belushi plays the good guy going up against a crazy US sheriff played brilliantly by James Bond himself Timothy Dalton!

I disagree. I thought Belushi was fine in his role.

I'm a totally bitchin' bio writer from Mars!

James Belushi's over the top performance was my favorite thing about this film.

"I kinda like you. I wanna take you to meet my poppa. He'd wanna meet you"

Shocked anyone would prefer Belushi in this. So many of the things he says and the way he says them are so ridiculous. I imagine there are people that over the top dumb, but he in no way portrays this kind of character well.

Many flaws in the movie, but, by far, his performance was the worst.

I have to disagree; he performed well as a typical tiny-brained sociopathic Texan moronic male. The only thing missing was a goatee that that type thinks makes them look 'distinguished'...like Larry the Cable Guy.

I thought he did well in such a shallow role.

No Belushi has ever done anything well. I do not enjoy assholes.

He did good. He was just playing a exaggerated version of himself.
