Lost Soul: Documentary - your thoughts

I saw the documentary very recently and throughly enjoyed it. It was very engaging, a little surreal and was not afraid to call spades spades about the somewhat odd behaviour of its stars.

Anybody else seen it?

I just watched it on Netflix. Fascinating!

I watched it on Netflix too and I agree it was a very warts and all documentary but as thorough as it was it oddly didn't mention a word about how David Thewlis replaced Rob Morrow's character during the production hiatus after Richard Stanley was fired so it would've been interesting considering how supposedly Stanley wanted Thewlis in the movie from the start was well as some of the horrible experiences Thewlis went through (falling off a horse and breaking his leg, dealing with Brando and Kilmers antics, etc.) that were so bad he disowned the movie refusing to ever watch it or attend the premiere.

Yeah, I just watched the documentary too and was surprised that David Thewlis wasn't even mentioned. I'd known for years that the filming of this movie had been a disaster, but I didn't realize things had gotten that crazy. I feel bad for the German actor who lost most of his scenes because Brando wanted a little Mini Me around. Then after the poor guy loses his scenes to this little dwarf, he has to put up getting punched in the nuts by him. Brando was such an odd bastard and Kilmer was a prick. Not surprising that Kilmer's career is dead.

I look at my red hands and my mean face, and I wonder about that man that's gone so wrong.

reply

That's because David Thewlis is a non-entity wherever he goes.

reply

echoing the weird exclusion of any mention of Thewlis in the doc,
considering they make sure to mention the initial casting of Bruce Willis, James Woods, Rob Morrow replacing Willis etc.

reply

Funny that the doc is more entertaining than the actual film.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.

Just finished Lost Souls and it was awesome. I remember being very excited about the film leading up to its release. I'd seen the 77 version as a kid. At the time a big Val Kilmer guy because due to the time the movie going public didn't know how difficult he was. You factor in Brando how do you not want to see this movie.

After the film i had a different view.

I was also waiting for the bit about Thewliss. I kept waiting for him to show up in the doc but to no avail. I even had to jump on here to find out about Rob Morrow as i didnt know he was anywhere near the movie. I see the film is on TV in a couple days. Think i'll watch it again for *beep* and giggles.

It is interesting to note that once you give someone some power and money, the real self comes out and it is usually not good...The documentary lets us glimpse this dynamic. Sex, drugs, egos, pride, Is this what they call success?

Found it on Netflix last night, loved it! Always wondered why and how it fell apart, great to hear it from the players themselves.

I believe Thewlis didn't want to be interviewed for the documentary. Sounds like this was a negative experience he would rather not dwell on.

Would have been nice to get an overview of this back story from Fairuza since she was unwillingly there after the firing of R. Stanley.

I think is one of the funniest documentaries I've ever seen, they all were candid about the whole experience, the german actor was especially charismatic. I had a lot fun listening to their anecdotes.
