So...what did you get out of this movie?

I watched this last night as my first WA film and it didn't phase me at all. The cast and characters were likeable, but I thought this film was exceedingly average, not good or bad or standout in any way. After the film ended I just was like "Uh, ok?" and got nothing out of it...so I ask what this film does for you and why you appreciate t so much?

It's funny because I watched Rushmore tonight and absolutely loved everything about it, and I feel like I totally got that movie, and on that board there's a question asking the exact same question...hence, I figure I might as well...

I'm not an Anderson fan, but I think that Bottle Rocket, like most of Anderson's movies, is about becoming a grown up. Most Anderson characters are adults who, at the beginnings of their movies, don't act like it. On the one hand, Anderson admires these "dreamers" in some sense. On the other hand, he acknowledges that people should become mature and responsible for their own sakes and for the sakes of the people in their lives.

Anthony is able to achieve all of the traditional markers of adulthood. He forms a mature romantic relationship, he starts earning a living like a normal person (albeit he briefly gets involved in crime to help his friend feel better), and he becomes involved in his community by coaching youth soccer. Dignan, on the other hand, has not fully grown up (which is why he is in jail), but he has taken some very big steps to adulthood in his care for his friends and associates (e.g. He went back for Applejack, refuses to get mad at the people who betrayed him, etc.) This taking of responsibility, caretaking of others, and control of his emotions are the components necessary for mature behavior, but Dignan has not yet been able to use them to create (or at least attempt to create) a stable life for himself.

Loved it because it has such an untypical humor for an American movie, I was positively surprised. As a motorbike rider the greatest scene for me was when Dignan arrived on that pocket-bike in the jumpsuit. He made wheelies, braked hard etc, so hilarious! Every move with the bike was a copy of his emotions at the moment talking with Anthony.

2nd best scene: Anthony walking behind the roommate (gorgeous!) doing anything to stay close to her.

There's so much more (codenames on walkie-talkie, codename zero) to this gem I recommend to anybody who has a subtle humor, enjoy!

I got that even from the very beginning, Wes Anderson had his own style and way of making films. Glad he's never compromised that.

Can't stop the signal.
