At the end SPOILERS...

... do you think Brad Pitt's "Mills" character will be cleared and won't have to face jail sentence for shooting John Doe, given the circumstances?

And with him being a notorious serial killer who ALSO SPOILERS - even murdered his wife, surely some extenuating circumstances can in a way at least clear them?

Also, if he was charged for shooting him, wouldn't Morgan's character get at least some sort of reprimand for hitting Doe at one point?

In the original "Death Wish" (1974) movie for instance, Charles Bronson's character got away with those violent vigilante executions. In the Dirty Harry movies, Clint Eastwood's character may have been wrong or out of order too and in the first film where he stepped on Scorpio's leg he was allowed back and faced no real punishment for it.

So how about here, thanks.

I half expected Brad's character to be the villain at the end, ordering Doe to do the killings. What gave him away for me was his jerky body movement he does sometimes (re shaving scene), also the fact that Doe said he saw him before when he was at the station, it sure would have made for a nice alternate ending.
To answer your question, he could get a reprieve given the circumstances.

I find it deeply both frustrating and intriguing that the police does NOT just allow other cops to even kill vicious human monsters like the serial killer John Doe here and that the legal system is happy to take action against such officers possibly even give them jail time rather than hail them as heroes.

Probably he just have a small sentence given the circunstances, but his career as cop is over, and he Will be humilliated in a trial where Also Sommerset would be forced to Talk about how angry he was all the time, and how he can't be a cop for that reason ( which was John Doe intention, turn his Wrath against him)
