On Judge Dredd blowing up that flying Ferrari.

Even if its driver did have some issues with drinking and driving, did Stallone's character really HAVE to shoot and blow his car up with a grenade launcher on his talking gun? Wasn't it taken a little too far? Cheers.

reply

yes man was repeats offender and was douche. he only learn if car blown up.

reply

I kinda thought Stallone's "Dredd" character overreacted here. Just as he did when he imprisoned Schneider's character for 5 years for hiding during a shootout in that cart.

reply

yes i agree the story set up that joseph dredd is heavy hand with law and abuse power at beginning but he change after getting taste of injust himself and become better man at end. good character arc and story!

So Judge Dredd then was more anti-hero than standard hero?

In the film "Soldier" (1998), Kurt Russell's "Todd" character in the battles that he took part in killed innocent people as well as armed guilty enemies, but when he got dumped on that waste planet, he learned humanity and when his mission came to protect that planet and its inhabitants, he only battled and killed the armed invaders and risked his life to protect the innocent lives of that community.

yes judge dredd start as anti hero. he almost like robot at beginning no emotion and then he become more human by end of film. it is same type of storys as robocop.

interesting that it is similar to solider. i have no watch more than half hour of soldier. i am big fan of kurt russells but find this film bore. i think it is because it is direct by paul "w.hat s.cript" andersoon, i do not like his style. he haxxors who ruin good film!!

reply

"Soldier" I thought was a decent to pretty good film overall and yes I have indeed seen it, many times.

reply

does it improve after first half hours?

reply

Well...

I actually enjoyed the first half of Soldier (1998) more than the second half. But in the second half there is some solid to very good action scenes in it as well. But while by no means perfect I consider it a solid guilty pleasure worthy of about 6.5/10 though rounded up to a 7. Even in its setting of a junk planet it still manages to be somewhat fun and creative which basically spells out "enjoyable trash".

And if you found some value in "Judge Dredd" (1995) as well, its worth a look.

Its also commonly referred to as a "side-quel" (unofficial "sequel") to "Blade Runner" (1982) and in my opinion its actually Paul W.S. Anderson's best film.

He is the law so yes.

reply

Yes. Aside from the added Stallone humor and lack of helmet, this Dredd is close to the original comics. He is a totalitarian when it comes to law and sentencing. Prior to the 80's, this film actually captures the odd style, silliness and character of Dredd. In megacity. It's almost needed. The outlandish situations must be met with harshness and the unrelenting application of the law.

In one issue, a radioactive fungi infects homeless people and turns their bodies into a fungus incubator. Eventually they blow up spreading spores which infect more people. The chief science judge becomes infected to see if there is a cure. When confronted, Dredd mentions that he must be the only one to be infected as he's the only one who can help. Eventually, the judges let everyone know that they have a cure and will help the sick. When all are gathered, they're locked into an isolated room to die of the infection because there is no cure and it's the only way to contain the infectious spores. That's pretty brutal as a friend and colleague dies and Dredd Justifies it within the law. It's even more brutal that they lie to innocent people and let them die alone and without remorse. But, it's also the only solution they had.
