unbelievable romance... no really, it's not believable

Is it just me or did anyone else not really follow how Simran
suddenly realizes she is swooning over Raj? He acts like an
arrogant and immature fool for a good part of their "courtship".
When he suddenly arrives in India to save Simran from a
marriage to a different arrogant fool, he asks her if she trusts
him (at least in the Hindi to English subtitle translation
he does) and she replies that yes, she trusts him with her life.
Hmmmm. Either she's a slow learner or totally smitten to the
point of stupidity, or this is really bad writing, or hey,
all of the above. Because up till this point, Raj has given
her plenty of opportunities to see why she really SHOULDN'T
trust him, such as when he convinced her that they slept together
while she was drunk, or when he told her he was in love with
her and then laughed in her face. Yeah, super romantic.
Maybe it's a cultural difference or bad translation. Maybe it's
that same old theme of chicks falling for the wrong dude...

Yeah I thought that too about some scenes, like the one where he says he loves her then laughs in her face.

But come on, you think Bollywood movies are supposed to be realistic?

all_stressed_out_and_no-one_to_choke

reply

I agree to an extent that it isn't realistic. But the fact that it's fantasy is what makes people enjoy it so much. It COULD be realistic, but all in all it's such a feel-good film.

reply

he laughed for two reasons (at least):
1) he had already told her that he would only be serious when he told the woman he loves that he loves her - the laugh covered this up
2) he was serious just to get a reaction from her. If she immediately responded in the negative then he had no chance. When she couldn't respond he knew something was there so he covered up and gave her an out.

ok, i haven't much been around to view a few of past post or anything about the movie since it's been a while since i saw the movie. but i'v watched it enought to understand where Raj and Simran are both coming from. First of all, Raj(as rich as he was in the movie) acts like who he is because he first of all was spoilt since he grew in a rich family without having to graduate. Simran came from a similar background but she wasn't rich and nor did she have any education but that she had at home. The movie started with both of them. Showing a bit of her and him, to give us a bit of an idea on how these two gsee each other and what conflicts or what is going to happen between these two or what is going to happen in which will involve both of these.

At first, Raj showed himself that he can't resist girls since they are all so attracted to him. He shows another scene which reflects this. This part where Raj and Simran first meet; on the train. Simran was just about to lose the train before Raj saved her and brought her inside. Rather being spoilt like he was, he continued his regeme about being all that in both in front of her and during the trip.

The first meeting made Simran really hate him and in general think differently of guys, in which makes her say that she is not interested in anyone, since they are all arrogant.

Throughout the movie, her point is proven with Raj been more arrogant wherever he was and wherever they were. But Raj at first sight couldn't resist her beauty and how nice she looked so, how they spent time together was a sceme in which Raj pulled at the shop of just normal things. This is where Raj encountered Simran coming and wanted to spend sometime with her personally to find out more about her. This is the first sign that Raj likes Simran, although he isn't showing it just yet.

Later on, after the encounter, Simran is yet saved again by Raj after Simran forgets her passport. Raj could hve just passed and let her get busted, but instead he went and saved her from the cops and took her wit her in the car he Borrowed. This is another sign in which shows that Raj wants to know Simran a bit better because he likes her but yet does not want to admit till later in the movie. They spend a night together, and after getting drunk and ending up in someone's house, Raj comes up with another sceme to test her. A test to see what her reaction will be if he acts as if they had sex or spent the night together. Obviously he wants to see if he should admit to her that he likes her or just leave it till he is positive about the feedback which he gets from her. Obviously after the first encounter between the two and Simran's hate for boys, she neglects and is disgusted until finally Raj tells her in a serious face and tone that nothing happened and that he is not that type of person. That part he is trying to get Simran to trust him in whatever happens that she is safe and that the person she saw before isn't the real him.

Later on when they were waiting for the train to arrive, they both sat next to each other. Raj started off about asking her questions about her life with family until the engagement thing came up where Simran said that she was getting married to someone in which she has never known or loved. Raj responds with how can you love someone who you have never met or seen. She responds with, throughout marriage you learn to love the husband no matter what. Raj straight away disagrees. Raj explains that a person is only meant to marry a person in which they can love with all their heart and trust them with their life as well as seeing them. The first sign of Raj's true side is shown to Simran. At that point, you see that Simran is finally starting to get closer to Raj and is trusting him more already. The first step in a relationship, Trust and friendship is earned. Simran replies with what about you, have you found that special someone? He replies with that she is hiding behind the clouds in the sky, that one day when he sees her, the clouds will open and show him that who he is seeing is the person he is meant to be with. In this case, he imagines no one but has Simran in mind. Another point in which is a close encounter between Simran and Raj. Raj explains there that he only is only serious about love when he finds that special someone. Simran becomes curious to who it is. He finds a true friend in him at that point.

Later on when they get near a church, Simran tells Raj that she wishes to pray to god in that church, although Raj doesn't like the idea, he decides to go with it for her sake, and because his feelings towards Simran is growing stronger. They get inside, Raj watches as Simran peacefully recites her prayer in her thoughts. You see that Raj is just staring at her completely, another sign in which shows Raj's true side and that his feelings are getting stronger by the minute.

When they get back to the train, their second final meeting ends up on a bridge close by the train back to London. Raj is playing his instrument and you can see that he is thinking about her, Simran doesn't see this just yet. But what Simran does see until this point, is a different person then the first meeting they had and the other encounters they had together. He see's the true side to Raj and she is too starting to like Raj more then just a friend. We don't see this yet because this is covered up until she realises that she has fallen for Raj later on. Anyway back at the bridge, Raj tells Simran that he has something important to tell Simran. He gives a serious face. Simran has yet to have a clue about what he is on about. Raj tells her that he has fallen someone during this trip, that there is someone that he loves and found. You can see Simran's face turns serious straight away and she is more aware then ever and is kind of scared of who it might be(not knowing that he is going to say it is her). He says that the person he loves/have fallen in love with is... Simran. Simran is stunned, she doesn't know what to say. That is the first reaction of nervousness and the first sign of Simran actually showing a different face rather then an angry face. Now normally after the first meeting, and by hearing this, she would have responded straight away, but she didn't reply because she too started to have feelings for him, but was scared to tell him, because she found it abit hard and she was getting confused about her feelings and scared because of her upcoming arranged marriage. She stood still watching him as Raj kept saying "i love you Simran" over and over, getting closer to her face. Then after saying nothing to him, he becomes aware that she doesn't feel the same although he finds that she too has fallen for him, because he could see it through her eyes, because the whole time, he was staring in her eyes. So after finding out how she feels, he decided to keep his true feelings and although he already said the truth, he wanted to tell her at the right time and so therefore wanted to lie, so the only option was laugh at her face. Then straight away you seen Simran's reaction change from a scared and stunned to an upset and angry face. By having this face, Simran i think says that he is too much and start to walk away while Raj makes a joke about her.

Raj's feelings started growing so strong that he almost falls in love with her. He though kept telling himself that she doesn't love him, until at that point he wanted to test it. He said to himself that after she walks, if she stops, looks back, then he has got his answer. That answer is that she too loves him and that there is a chance for the both of them. You realise now that after everything, their relationship from a friendship has grown into something more emotional, something like love which they haven't revealed to each other yet(Well Simran hasn't yet anyway).

After arriving at the trainstation, they both said their goodbyes, and departed. The scene first showed their hands or both passing each other(not 100% sure), after walking away from each other, i think Raj first looks back to see if Simran is going to stop and tell him how she feels, but keeps walking. Simran does the same, and then they make their way back to their homes, and through each step they take, they can't stop thinking of each other. This shows that they both have fallen in love with each other.

In otherwords, from having two strangers bumping into each other, to friendship to more then friendship, is all part of a relationship in which two people fall in love. It's like a procedure. This is what this movie is trying to produce, the ways in which people can fall in love, and this is just one of the ways. Although it might not come out exactly the same way as the movie, but all the aspects in which are shown in the movie like strangers, to friends then to couples are all based the same way in real life.

They both couldn't live without seeing each other and knowing that Simran is going to get married, Raj's goal was to go and stop the marriage and win Simran's heart which already belonged to him by travelling to India for her.

And you see how their loves becomes stronger through each scene and you see what they have to go through until finally being able to be together.

Well i hope you actually spend the time and read this, hehe sorry i wrote so much, but i guess i just wanted to show my point of view.

Yours truly
Shivan Kamal

Nice analysis!

I do somewhat disagree with you on the bridge scene, though. I believe SRK was testing Simran! He knew he had feelings for her but he also wanted to know it it was worth it to continue this course. If she responded negatively then he would know that she didn't love him and he had no chance. Since she couldn't respond, then he realized that she didn't let herself think about this possibility and he forced it on her. He turned it to a joke so that she could "save face".

I believe that he first knew he was in love with her when he held her in the bedroom after tricking her into thinking something went on that previous night. He started caressing her hair and then paused, realizing something was new.

reply

Yeah, that is what i was trying to say on the bridge scene. Because although he knew he had feelings for her, and although kind of seeing through her eyes thinking that there may be a chance, he wanted to test it to see if it was actually true and that like you said he should continue. Until finally making a judgement while she walks away saying that if she turns backs and looks, then he knows that she likes him as well, but if she doesn't then there is no chance :D.

But you could see how it all works out though, because although she hadn't taken that possibility into consideration, she knew that her whole time with him was really something special and it was really quite enjoyable rather then been disturbed by it and somewhat disliked it afterwards. So through time she did realise her feelings for him, and that kind of proved it when she did turn back and look at Raj before she went on the train. But until finally when they were seperated from each other, she finally realises what she has really lost and that she has really fallen for him.

And one more pointer about Raj's feelings. You could also see that he loved her at some point because when they got back together with the rest of the crew, they were sitting down and looking at some photos, and there was one of her and him when he was pulling a prank on her by giving her a fake flower, he instead of giving it back, kept it and cherished it.

But there is one thing that got to me about that movie and that photo. I mean he kept the photo with him the whole time. How on earth did it end up in Simran's hands on her engagement night?!! I mean Raj never gave it to her and from what i saw there was only one copy of it, unless they never showed another copy of it when Raj saw it >.>. I mean there would have been absolutely no way that the father could have found out if that picture didn't appear in her hands and flowing outside.

Its just kind of strange to me in that case, otherwise that was my analysis :P. Hehe i kind of almost pin pointed everything about the movie, sorry :S. I just good at analysing movies because when i watch a movie(especially indian) i tend to keep watching it over and over about 3 times, not only because i enjoy the movie, but i want to find out everything about how they get together and etc. Because when something like this post occurs, i could point out the facts and tell people what happens and how it occurs. But i may be wrong in my view, that is where everyone elses point of view comes in :P

reply

This was a great post. If you have ever heard the phrase "birds of a feather" then you will understand my point.
Raj decided against keeping the picture right after Simran's girlfriend said that "those were great pictures and she wanted a set of the wedding pictures". At that point Raj realized what was in store for her and gave her the picture back saying she dropped it.
Like you, I watch my favorite movies many many times. Most people think I'm crazy to do this. I don't care. I like what I see.

reply

"I mean there would have been absolutely no way that the father could have found out if that picture didn't appear in her hands and flowing outside. "

You may also wish to consider that had he not given back this picture the the father would not have found it and Raj wouldn't have gotten the girl. The ruckus actually caused the whole finale to come together.!

reply

So true, very very true. I get your point at least. And i finally get how that misfortune happened :D. Well ppl might think we are crazy, but I think we can be intelligent. Since by watching a film, we tend to get caught up with who's role is who and etc etc, that sometimes when it come to the storyline, people get confused and don't see how things happen. Hehe i guess that's what we are here for :D

reply

That's exactly why I'm here! It's great to have someone else's opinion on these things. The stories themselves are wonderful, but the interpretions can be astounding. And once you have the "ignore" list set up, this board browsing is a lot of fun and educational.

uhh, you apparently didn't get that Raj's cocky/arrogance, sly guy attitude is like one of the major staples or type of hero genres in not just Indian films, but most American films in general. It goes on the premise of the arrogant badboy really having a heart of gold and snagging the unattainable girl who get's him to reveal his "softer side." Yea, broken down into it's basic elements, it sounds really sappy and unreal, but this movie was about the characters, their chemistry together, and how they related to one another thru song and dance (as most bollywood films are).

reply

Well if you think about it. ALl movies are unlreal anyway because they are acted out by actors and actresses. So therefore they never did any of that in real life. But I wouldn't really call it unreal. Why? Because honestly if you think about it, there are people out there who are similar. Some are to afraid to show their softer side until someone pulls it out of them. Some just are arrogant and stupid but can be different inside. Because we look at people for who they are outside of them. What they say and their appearance. What a person really needs to look at is their inner self. A person deep within them, the real them in other words. Then you can judge that person to see if his is what he is or completely different. In this movie, Raj was shown as an arrogant and spoilt child who chases a girl which he has slight chances of ever getting. But like you said through chemistry they really find out the real person within one another. Thats how a person normally falls in love. If they look and find whats within that person's heart and who he really is and if it suits her or him.

I think there were so many reasons she fell in love with him - he was childishly impossible but he was also talented (piano playing interlude before Ruk Jaa), he genuinely liked her and when she refused to spend the night with him in a room he came to be with her in a barn, he tried to trick her about how they spent the night but then he apologized for that, he saved her from the cops, he gave her a chance to respond to his "I love you" and after a long wait said he was joking, by the time the trip ended they were more than buddies - he realized that she did not. Then he refused to come to her wedding and created the moment of realization for her. I love this film...

reply

not only that. they learned to trust each other. she found out what a good a person he really was (under that exterior) and he found out how important she was to him! this is a classic romance where the love is really deep on both sides. I hope this film lives on forever.

reply

I know that Raj loves Simran but it seems to me that Simran loves him more. There were a few scenes that annoyed me.

On the night before simran's wedding she seemed more upset that Raj that they may not be able to get married. She's the one who ran to him.

His jokes in the 2nd half also bothered me because they were insensitive. He said in a deleted scene that he is leaving her because he doesn't think that he can convince her father that he is the right person for her. In another scene before karwa chauth, he said that he would happily leave if Simran didn't love him because it would save him from the everyday drama in their household. I don't know why those jokes didn't bother Simran...their love story wasn't believable for me either...

It's a movie. That's what movies are made for. DDLJ is a classic!

Something they do in Bollywood films. They condense the romance with the songs. The songs are supposed to convey the intimacy / rapport that developed between them. A little after Zarasa Jhoom; they were in love.
