Streep was terrible.

I can't get passed the fact that this 'great' actress is portraying an Italian warbride so unconvincingly, starting with an accent that is nothing even close to an Italian accent. It's more like a poorly done slavic accent Just imagine Sophia Loren with a fire in her belly and then know how the part should have been played. Eastwood was terrific, but streep makes this unwatchable for me.

I'm sorry but I can't diggest "Meryl Streep" and "Terrible" in the same sentence.

No, she was perfect.

Here's looking at you kid.

nevermind the accent, what threw me off were her mannerisms... this is not Francesca from the book. She took the character and made it 'Meryl Streep playing Francesca'. Which was probably fine with Eastwood the director, in all his movies women are ditzy. But the book character wasn't.

reply

Lucky us she wasn't the Francesca from the book! But them again, lucky us the whole movie was quite different from the book.
I love Meryl in this move, she's just flawless. Perfect for the role, really.

What? Not Italian at all? Streep was terrible? What are you saying Arabella?
My grandmother was Italian and Meryl's Francesca reminded me so much of her.
I love her performance.

Finally saw it.. Meryl Streep is amazing. I had an aunt who's Italian, from Bari! Yep, Bari. My aunt died in 1996 and she's been with me in my mind and in my heart every waking hour since I saw the film because Meryl Streep brought her back to me. (Also, thank you Martin for pushing me to see it)

reply

She has used inept accents throughout her career. She is the queen of the overrated.
