Why such a low rating for a really good movie?

Babe is one of my favorite movies of all time so I come here only to see the movie at a measly 7.0 I would probably give it at least an 8.5. I Know everyone has different tastes in movies but, there's not many people who thinks this movie deserves at least an 8.0? I mean am I missing something? I really believe this movie deserves to be on a top ten list of best family films. Anyone else agree?

I was also surprised that this has such a low rating. I expected somewhere around a 7.4 or 7.5 for it.

Now it's even lower. I'm watching it again on Starz Kids. I came on IMDB "expecting" an easy 8 or higher...this BS score was under 7.

As of this writing it's down to 6.8. I also have to say I was very surprised to see it rated that low when I came here. Deserves much better.

I don't think there's any vegetarian agenda in it either. I just think it tries to present a semi-realistic view of farm life.

I was expecting about 8.0. So sad. It's not preaching to become a vegetarian but as you say shows some aspects of the reality of small farms. And the big farms are a thousand times worse.

Almost depressing to see it rated so low..I watch some pretty gritty and dark movies generally but this is still one of my favorites.
I think the previous posters are right about the reason for its low rating as far as IMDb being predominately rated by young males that loves blood and guts, T&A and super heroes. They don't know yet the value of having more eclectic taste. Variety being the spice of life and all..
Such a shame to see it so low though..

All you people ranting about young males don't know what you're talking about. One look at the user ratings and you'd see females gave Babe about the exact same average rating.

This is an enjoyable movie, but how does one persuade more people to give this an 8, 9, or 10.

I gave it an 8, but some of my all time movies are rated 8.1.

Just take a look at other movies rated 7. There are a lot of very good ones in there.

I completely agree. This is one of the most wonderful movies of all time -- the overall user rating is completely inexplicable to me. It shocked me when I saw it.

Agreed- I just watched this for the first time in about 15-20 years with my 4 year old, there are a lot of Landmark films that i have never seen (Little Mermaid, Star Wars, Indiana Jones) but i've still seen a fair few an Babe has always been a film i have affection for

You have your own Little Ranking list in your head and certain films are a benchmark like Toy Story, and as you get older your tastes expand and you watch darker more challenging and 'important' films but then i've ended up back at Babe again and appreciate it even more now than i did then , it still holds up

Most films try to manipulating the tears out of you but this one is so underplayed i thought it was masterful, as much as it's about Babe i was more drawn to Hogget and following it from his perspective, you get the little backstory of the Dog losing his hearing and messing up the Competition killing Hogget's pride and he sees redemption in the Pig

The last line of the Film again so subtle yet has a massive effect because he only speaks about 12 lines of dialog throughout the whole film, you totally feel it

Very surprised to see such a low score i was always under the impression this was a classic, yes i did pick up this time on the animal cruelty theme running through but like others have said it didn't bother me 90 percent of films have an agenda and they are usually more sly and lets not forget the films with creepy sexually perverse undertones, this one is at least a noble one, didn't bother me at all

The fact this has been underscored makes me like it even more now

Edit- Just looked on Wiki and James Cromwell became vegan after making the film, just thought that was a nice little touch and adds even more weight to that final line, those tears were genuine lol
