Have many Americans seen this movie?

I'm English myself and this is VERY popular over here. Fair enough it's not as heard of as say Twilight or something but it has a massive cult following and rightly so this movie is a masterpiece. So do many Americans know of this brilliant film? and what do you think?

The first time I saw this film was on IFC around 2000. I have recommended it to many Americans over the years. Very powerful film with an unflinching look at domestic abuse, alcoholism, and dysfunctional families. Honestly I would think many Americans would find the film difficult to watch because it would remind them of the plight many Native Americans have dealt with and continue to deal with to this very day.

I just watched this movie and thought it was great, very powerful and moving.

Some aspects were very realistic, like the late night partying, the drunken party-goer raping the daughter, the son being taken away, and the way in which the fights escalated in spousal abuse. I've seen many households like this. Other aspects of the movie were more glamorized though and didn't interest me.

Speaking from the northern half of North America, i.e. Canada, eh? daughter and I watched this excellent DVD this evening and were shaken but impressed by it.

I learned of it from dear old IMDb board somewhere and immediately petitioned our local library for it. Although they did not have it on our shelves, bless their hearts they issued an Inter-Library Loan search and found it for us.

Lovely to discover that so many viewers around our planet have viewed and treasured it.

The scenery was lovely.

I stumbled across this movie on HBO many, many years ago. It is an exceptional movie.

I actually discovered the movie some years after it had been out. It came out in 1994 and I discovered it around 2002 because someone on a discussion board mentioned it. I watched it and loved it. I'm real big on indie movies and couldn't believe I had never heard about it. I showed it to my family who typically are very stiff when it comes to foreign or independent movies and they all loved it! Needless to say, I had tons of Once Were Warriors DVDs on order as Christmas gifts because that's how much everyone loved it.

Black American here.

Watching this movie, I was just stunned by how much the culture of anger, desperation, and dysfunction is parallel to what we see in the "hood" here.

It's like I know these people, who get drunk, fight, beat their wives, yell at their kids, and leave those same kids vulnerable to the predators of the world

It's like the ghetto's the ghetto all over the world

The one BIG difference between here and there thought is the gun culture.

In the American version of that, there's more driveby shootings

I don't recall it getting any theater run here in L.A. but it did hit the video rental circuit as soon as it went to VHS so I was able to see it in '95. Great movie and it still holds up.
