Music too loud, can't hear dialogue.

i really like dahls film work and was eager to catch this on dvd. Found it after scouring various rentals stores and slipped in in my player excited. But for 80 per cent of the movie the background music was so loud that the dialogue was almost inaudible. I hate this because it has no subtitles and the recorded sound is soo dodgy. Is it just the australian release dvd Nicolas Roeg collection and have other people had this same problem?

I have noticed some DVDs don't have subtitles listed but your closed caption from your TV settings still work.
Not sure about this movie but I watched it from premium channels and the Closed Caption worked.
All I can suggest is to try it.

I'm in Australia too and had the same problem. Witty dialog (I assume) doesn't count if you can't hear it and there are no subtitles.

You can sometimes fix this issue in movies with compression settings and levels. I watch most movies on my PC so I use programs like VLC Media Player or Daum Potplayer. In those you can change the levels and lower the music but increase the voices. It isn't always separated perfectly but you can usually tweak it enough to make a decent difference. And then you can use compression too which makes the quiet parts louder without the louder parts getting any louder.

The issue is not the music being too loud, it's just the dialogue being too quiet. Terrible sound mix, especially notable in the very early stages of the movie. I don't really think it's a good film at all, and that only becomes more and more apparent the more that I sit through it. Yet you just have to keep going back again and again for Fiorentino

Use the stereo mix, not the 5.1 which they botched.

The music was HORRIBLE and its repetitiveness freaking annoying. Apparently we had to be reminded constantly that this movie is supposed to be a film noir AND "funny"...
