What a load of s**t.

Maybe it's just me but I watched this (by accident) last night and couldn't help thinking 'army recruitment propoganda'.

Get a dumb comedian with an even dumber following to make a triumphant American army movie....around the same time that a certain middle eastern skirmish was kicking off....and sit back and wait for the stoned idiots to join up.

What a load of souless, transparent *beep*

yeah i watched it last night and thought "recruitment advert" . But i dont think that was their intention.

another thing that struck me was they never got into trouble with anyone much or seemed to be in much danger it was like "peewee's big army adventure"

I also thought 'poor version of stripes' but it wasnt actually bad...

You people are a load of s**t. In the Army Now is one of the funniest movies ever made. Pauly Shore is an untopped comedian. You people may see Andy Dick as a second bannana but, he and Pauly have great chemistry. We cannot forget Lori Petty and David Alan Grier. Every movie needs supporting actors and actresses. Lets just say this movie had great ones. If you really think about it you should relize that you are supposed to actually watch a movie and understand it before you talk trash on it.

I didn't think it was propaganda at first, but after really familiarizing myself with how not fun war is (like the book "All Quiet on the Western Front") I found it to be very different from real war. I don't think they intended to make it a propaganda film, I think they wanted to make a Pauly Shore war movie, and that's unlikely to be very real or down to Earth.

Furthermore, if being in the army was that fun we oulda had enough people in to win the war in Iraq by now.

I Agree.

this movie was absolute crap

You are aware this movie is a comedy and that it was made about ten years ago. The former may be one of the most important parts. Has anyone here seen the show M*A*S*H? It was decidedly anti-war and yet it to featured a very bizarre and unreal look at Army life. How many hairy Lebanese-American men in nightgowns have jumped from mountains on hanggliders to go AWOL during the Korean War (or any war, for that matter)?

reply

So because the movie happened to take place in the Army it's automatically propaganda?

I have to return some video tapes.

And your point, Captain Spanky is what?

Army recruitment propaganda, psst, FYI homre, the US Military sponsers various movies all the time, if they put a positive spin on the military for recruitment purposes, this movie was actually turned down.

Movies that did make it though are
Stripes
Perfect Storm
Band of Brothers
Saving Private Ryan

So yeah, most good movies have recruiting elements, lighten up, no one is forcing you to join the army.

"Fighting next to Pauly Shore...geez...if it were me, I'd frag him. Seriously. Just say he was killed in crossfire, or the gun went off while being cleaned, or some other excuse. They'd buy it. It's f'n Pauly Shore!"

You'd be amazed at the number of soldiers who would make Pauly Shore look like a washed-up second rate comic.
I speak from experience: about 85% of Army time is slow and boring (overall, not necessarily in the present combat zone) and G.I.'s can come up with some off the wall stuff to keep them occupied and deal with the stress. (making homemade liquor in canteens is the mild stuff.)
For example, visit www.skippyslist.com. It's actually a soldier with an off-kilter sense of humor and a LOT of free time, it's hilarious!

^ Exactly. This is a great movie.

Losing people who joined the army because they were inspired by Pauly Shore is no great upset...

If you're talking about the Gulf War, though, then I don't see the connection. The first round was over by the time this was being put out.

I'm sorry, I don't speak monkey...
