This movie is not good

I just watched The Crow for the first time after meaning to for years. I had no expectations so it wasn't a let down or anything. But I want to explain my thoughts and see if anyone else felt the same way or what anyone else's opinion is.

I found the movie to be goofy even though it was trying to be serious. It has some horribly cheesy lines (which I enjoyed laughing at but still probably wasn't intentional).

The effects have aged pretty badly, though I tried to ignore that and instead put myself back in a 90s mindset. Though, they definitely didn't help.

The characters were nobodies with no real depth. They just had some silly lines and fake-feeling relationships that didn't make me feel anything for them. The cop just believes that Eric was invincible because he told him he was and I'm pretty sure he saw no proof of this until the end of the movie.

I just didn't buy Eric's relationship with the young girl. The movie TOLD ME to care. But it didn't actually make me care at all.

Eric also had these fun/funny killer moments and lines that didn't really match the dark tone or match how angry I thought he was supposed to be.

The plot has simply been done before and after and better. He kills a bunch of guys and eventually fights the main bad guy. He loses his powers when the crow is killed... but then the crow isn't really dead... and he kinda still has his powers, but also doesn't have them...? What?

There was nothing special about this movie to me, at all. Its just there.

The idea and dark look are great and I hope the remake finally happens. I feel like they'll actually get it right this time.

Another jackass who thinks people care about his opinion so much they are going to read their ridiculous diatribe as if they saw something other people couldn't possibly have discovered on their own.

it was an ok movie, i'm glad i saw it, but have no urge to rewatch it any time soon 6/10

i also agree with most of your points, i liked the camp factor of the movie though

I don't know what film you were watching because the crow isn't goofy at all, it's a very dark and serious revenge movie, the graphic novel is really dark too, it's equally as dark as sin city 1 and 2, and Eric Draven wasn't being goofy at all, he was quite angry, intimidating, and savage, but we did a few glimpses of his humane side which worked.

Sounds to me like you need to stick to movies more up your alley like Chick Flicks.

Such a stupid response...

AGREE WITH YOU ON MOST OF YOUR POINTS! The movie had a great visual style but it was poorly written (the one liners from the villain were especially cheesy even by B movie standards) and the acting was mediocre at best.
About the plot inconsistency you mentioned the fact is that they had to do a portion of the movie without the lead actor with body doubles and had to reshoot and edit the ending with the footage they had so I wouldn't criticise the movie for that.
I think that the main reason that people love this film is because it was Brandon Lee's last but overall my opinion is that it was very poorly written!

reply

Actually they did not "have to reshoot and edit the ending with the footage they had."

In fact the overwhelming majority of all of Brandon's scenes were already completed by the time he got fatally wounded.

Movies are not shot in sequence. It was in fact the earliest scenes of the film that had not been shot yet, and for which they had to use a body double. The scene where Draven emerges from the grave, enters the loft apartment, and applies the makeup was a body double, plus the scene where Draven plays his guitar on the rooftop.

The rest of the film, including the ending scenes were all Brandon and were as originally planned. A very tiny amount of footage was left to shoot when Brandon died, which was part of the reasoning of why it would be worth finishing the film and releasing it anyway -- about 90% of his scenes were all in the can.

This movie is not just good, it's great, a true masterpiece and fitting tribute to Brandon Lee. So may I ask you what movies you consider good then? Great? If you do not like this movie or think it's "not good" then you've obviously never been in love, never lost anyone close to you, or are a typical millenial troll.

reply

Why do you have to jump to conclusions like that? How does disliking this, of all movies, equate to never having felt love or loss? That's ridiculous. My most recent movie I can't stop thinking about is literally called "Love," by Gaspar Noe. It is artistic and beautiful and your accusation would be more fitting for someone who didn't feel anything during something like that.

Sure, we can call The Crow a fitting tribute to Brandon Lee. I won't deny that. Just as Furious 7 is a touching tribute/sendoff for Paul Walker, i still wont stand here and say that it is the strongest film of that franchise. Because it isn't. Just as I could never agree that The Crow is a true masterpiece of filmmaking. They both have memorable qualities, but examples of great, perfectly-written, perfectly-crafted cinema, they are not. The Crow is technically a mess, and anyone who denies it, is just ignoring those rough edges and only allowing the good parts to shine through.

See how I explained that? I didn't call anybody any names or any kind of degrading insult. That's how you have a conversation.

You didn't bother to explain how it was technically a mess. If it were technically a mess it wouldn't have gotten such praise from professional film critics.

See how I explained that? I didn't call anybody any names or any kind of degrading insult. That's how you have a conversation.

Yet you were calling people typical Internet douchebags before. Maybe you should follow your own rules.

reply

I explained how it was mess earlier. And I don't take film critics into account when I consider my own opinion. Otherwise, that wouldn't be an opinion.

And... Those were separate responses. That guy was overreacting. He wasn't interested in having a conversation.

The second comment required a different response. That was an attempt at a conversation while making assumptions and calling me a troll. I didn't lay down any rules. I don't need to follow any rules that you assumed I was trying to set. I replied to two separate things.

All you're doing is picking apart what I said. Thats... fun, I guess.

reply

I didn't think the film was bad, but I probably won't watch it again unless I'm super bored. I like Eric's character. He wasnt the typical vengeful character. He had more depth. I think people over think effects and tone and whatever else people talk about when it comes to how a film has "aged." None of those things occur to me. It was a decent film, not mind blowing, but decent, and I liked the soundtrack.
