George (spoilers)

Did they ever give a reason why they decided to kill George Tooley at the end of the series?

I really enjoyed the show, but I just couldn't get my head around why they felt
the need to kill him off! It just made me so mad.

I do know they had an alternate ending where Frost is killed..
Maybe they just felt they had to do something over the top?

I just watched the final season for the first time and came here to see if anyone else was bothered by this. I never understood why George was so underappreciated in the first place...Frost had a revolving door of partners on investigations and good old George filled that space when Clive or Wonder Woman or the guy played by that actor who played Inspector Japp wasn't there, but really to me George was as big a part of the show as Mullett and Frost. Maybe it was a plot device to make Frost retire. Anyway, it was too sad. The character deserved better.
I love the show and have watched my way through the whole thing in the last year and halfway through again but not every episode has the rewatchability factor and I guess the finale is one of those for me, much as I like Phyllis Logan.

I was satisfied to see that Jack ended up with someone, but I sort of wanted it to be Shirley. I was hoping that he finally got his act together and worked on the relationship with her. They seemed to have a mutual fondness for one another.

The death of George irritated me no end. Come on - take that annoying Mullet instead.

I have ended up rewatching the series, or am in progress. Agreed about Frost and Shirley. In the two part episode with the car thieves at Christmas they were good together!

Yes, Jack and Shirley did well together. Being a nurse, I think she understood how complicated and demanding his job was, which is why I thought their relationship might last. But who can blame her for deciding Jack was just not putting enough effort into the relationship and likely never would?

This series is one I sometimes put on when I can't decide what to watch. Even though I've watched every season about three times, I still like watching it. It's one of those shows where I noticed something I missed on a previous viewing. And if the time between viewings is long enough I often can't remember whodunit.
