Does he die when he's punched into the river or is it just left ambiguous?

I think it's clear that he drowned.

But it wasn't even deep. How could he have drowned? He should've just got right back up.

He was unconscious underwater.

He was also wearing a metal breast plate. Very possible that weighed him down underwater in addition to being unconscious

He was probably knocked unconscious. The real Richelieu fared far worse.

Only in the sense that he was sick.

Didn't the real Richelieu actually outlive the king?
