What was her crime? That she was desperate and really liked Sam and wanted him to liker her too? I get Jonah doesn't like her because for some reason he's obsessed with Annie... But I do get the feeling that the film sides with him on his contempt for her. It's really unsympathetic. I mean if y'all are feeling bad for Walter, what about her? She has an annoying laugh so she should go *beep* herself?

In the end they had to come up with SOMETHING, so they gave her the line about wanting to spend time with Sam on her own after tiring of Jonah's insults.

reply

I think she dodged a bullet to be honest. Jonah was a little *beep* life would have been intolerable.

"The dead do not suffer the living to pass"
"You will suffer me"

What was her crime?

She's a ho!

reply

No crime. Her mannerisms seemed to annoy Sam so I could not imagine him ever ending up with her. The fact that Jonah didn't like her was ancillary...in my mind.

reply

I didn't find that her laugh was annoying, it was fake. Made me think she was just trying to get with him, laughing at every little thing he said. That indicates no chemistry. Over time the fake laughs would stop and she would be a different person. So the relationship never would of worked out anyway.

reply

Yeah, she seemed like a nice person.

Jonah was horrible to her. This detail, I think, speaks to Sam's poor parenting, showing that he couldn't raise the boy on his own.

I didn't like the character at all. You could tell she didn't like the child and if they would've become serious, or worse, married, she would've been the a-typical bitchy, jealous stepmother who would've prevented Jonah from seeing/talking to his father, unless she was there. That woman needed a childless man to date!

I should like these late 80s / early 90s days when the world was in it's grandest shape!
Divorce was rare, no smartphones, entertainment epitome - no retarding Pokemon, Teletubbies, Shitney Spears, Tschassdin Weeeener, Kim Asshole & Co CRAP.
No Trash Millennials ruining it all! However that kid was one of the very first Trash Millennials prototypes! 🗑️💩

I don't get the praise on Tom Hanks nor the characters he plays. It's Hollywood marketing and everyone falls trap like Emperor's New Clothes fairytale! No one can tell truth plain sight like it is. I would never fall for someone over such a RANDOM radio convo. The only sympathetic part was that he was a young widower raising a 8 yrs old now on his own. But whatever else he said was of no true likeableness... esp the Sex Stuff!

His assholeness was best portrayed over the more truthful mouth of his son. A brat I wouldn't wanna choose to be around for just 1 minute on my own free will. See his babysitter. Who would hire a unrelated gothic psycho?

I am the main audience for romantic comedies. But I felt only sorry for Walter and Victoria. Normalcy in self-absorbed narcissistics.
That kid, his father were the real antagonists, also Meg Ryan's character putting Walter on a scale while adoring someone she doesn't know at all. Frankly Sam was way worse than Walter comparing bigger picture. Plus Sam has that totally spoiled antiauthorian kid on his ass for the next 10 yrs as venomous package dictatinh his father's life and of course will command the new woman like the general of the house.

To judge a woman for not having the most perfect laugh or teeth or whatever is what has become of this fake world by 21st Trash Millenium! As interior designer she would have been a way better match to an architect as some media propaganda blablablaaah whore.
Of course laugh was a bit artificial as dating is awkward and everybody feels more or less uncomfy. That's not determining a person's moral, character and worth!
