Rest in Peace, Mr. Fischer. You had a brilliant mind like the world had never known before. I am sorry for your troubles later in life and hope that now you may experience eternal tranquility. You will be missed but we can still enjoy part of your story though this film.

From what I've just read about Bobby Fischer, he sounds like a crackpot, a real wacko who is strongly anti-American, anti-Semitic and many other things (he praised the September 11th terrorist attacks, among other things). I didn't know much about him, but what I've just learned isn't very pleasing to me. Rest in peace, I guess.

reply

Gee, i didn't know he was that kind of a guy.

Hi,
one good point in your posting is that Mr. Fischer hadn't so much to do with what was going on in the movie - but otherwise I would like to ask you some questions:
1) Don't you think it's a misapprehension to mingle such persons who are against Jews (=racists) with such persons who feel concerned about the way how Israel is constantly acting within and without his territory: brutal use of armed force whenever it fits in their concept (no need to go into the details - think about Gaza, Southern Lebanon, Sabra and Schatila, etc. etc.)... but, Sir, I do NOT believe that he (Fischer) ever intended to insult the Jewish people as such. He criticized the Israel Government. Is that imperdonable? And of course he never posed to think every Palestinian were a lamb and every Israeli a cold blooded and bad person. Never did he say anything to that effect!
2) It leaves a bad smell whenever someone utters such a sharp criticism just after the person to be criticized has passed away. It just looks as if the person who speaks out NOW has waited until the deceased can't speak against no more. "De mortuis nil nisi bene" (say nothing except good things about the deceased") may sound exaggerated, but there's a kernel of truth in it!
Rest in peace, Bobby Fischer.
Kind regards
Andreas

Rot in Hell, Mr. Fischer. Yeah- you may have been a chess genius, but as a human being, you sucked. Whatever you may have done to promote the game of chess and bring it into the mainstream was negated by your vicious, hateful paranoid delusional vitriol. You effectively squandered whatever goodwill you had created. You will NOT be missed from this corner. Your legacy will just be that of another raving, babbling, lunatic madman foaming at the mouth who belonged in the loony bin. GOOD RIDDANCE, YOU PIECE OF HUMAN GARBAGE.

He was obviously mental. He died because he didn't want to be treated. He didn't believe in western medicine.

OP: "Checkmate" is a fine thing to say. Who does know the perfect thing to say at moments like this.

Thanks for the post about Fischer's finding tranquility. He was obviously a mentally disturbed man, and ... one can only hope that his soul finds the peace that eluded him in life.

reply

Good riddance!

WWBBD?
(What Would Brian Boitano Do?)

reply

Obviously, Fischer had a lot of problems but in no way is that a reason to say "good riddance." The man is a legend in chess. And for that much he should be given some respect.

reply

But he had no respect for a lot of people.

reply

And you seem to have no respect for a lot of people as well.

reply

RIP!

Go the mighty maroons!

reply

Fischer was a sick, sick man with some very twisted ideas about the world. He gave no respect to others, so gets none in return. Good Riddance!

reply

The guy was a jerkoff! So he was great at chess. Big f'ing deal! It's a goddamn game!

reply

Yes, he was quite a jerkoff. But I believe he suffered from mental illness, as well as a very unhappy childhood. That's why the title of the film is so ironic. Jonathan Poe is more the next Fischer than Josh is.

reply

Yeah, that probably adds up.
